iPod sync Problem: transferring instead of copying
« on: June 17, 2003, 01:51:24 pm »

folks

as already posted, i got a new 30gb ipod. i veryfied the problem step by step:

the ripping works fine, i can find the mp3s in the 'my music' directory.

then i syncronize with ipod, and after the files arrived on the ipod, all the data in the 'my music' directory are gone (just the folders remain). This means i can't listen to music just on the pc, because he doesn't find the sound-files of the media library.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanx Lukas

Lukas,

Are you doing file conversions during Synchronization? If so, what version of MC are you running? There is a problem in the current version of MC 9.1.200 which is fixed in the next build which might be tonight. If there is not a new build of MC, look for an updated plugin in an hour or so. It will be version 9.0.30.

Hi Steve

i got mc plus version 9.0.180

Basically i do rip the cds in the same format as i syncronize them with my ipod (mp3 vbr normal/high). sometime he does some conversions when i did some imports of files i already have on my pc.

maybe it has to do with something i think might be strange during the syncronizing process:
it takes approx. 3 seconds for mc to check, wether the file is already on the ipod (marked as skipping). this part of the sync process takes much more time than the copying of the new ripped files. today, i just got like 100 files (x 3 sec = 1.5 min.) it's frightening to think about what happens if i got like 2000 songs and just want to add one new ripped cd...

Hope you got a brillant idea. Thanx in advance.

Lukas,

Your symptoms are exactly what I reported a couple of weeks ago.  When I combine that information with the fact that you're running 9.0.180, I'm 99.9% sure the problem is with the version you're running and that there's a setting you've made to cause files to be transcoded before being transferred to your iPod.  Steve's been working pretty hard to get this right over the last couple of weeks and yesterday's beta version was pretty well there.

I suggest you do the following:
- Download 9.1.201
- Install it
- Go to the plug-ins page and download the latest iPod plug-in (during my testing last night, I noted that the after installing 9.1.201, I had an old version of the iPod plug-in)
- Format your iPod from within MC
- Try syncing again

If you want more info, read through the "ipod SUPPORT" thread for about the last two or three weeks and search on transcoding.  Also posting problems or issues in that thread is more likely to get help from other iPod users.

Hope you find this helpful.

Cheers,
kc

Lukas,

KC's advice is sound. Either try turning off transcoding, or move to the newer version would be my advice.
