Is there a way to do this, as there is for burning disks?  I'm an infrequent visitor here and any help is appreciated.

If I understand correctly what you want, you can use the disk writer feature that's detailed in this old post to write a crossfaded playlist to a single file. (this still works in the current version)
Make sure you check the checkbox to encode to mp3 in disk writer options.
