When using MediaCenter on a Windows box, to feed a digital bit-perfect output to a DAC, via, for example, the USB port...

... does the PC's sound card play any role?

Would such a setup work, even on a PC with no sound card?
(I am guessing that the sound card plays zero role -- but I am not 100% sure)

I am asking, because I am busy planning on which PC I should use to feed my soon to be purchased DAC.  So I want to know if I need to put any consideration into the sound card (whether it is built in to the motherboard or a plug-in card).

Please note that the PC will be used only for its USB output to the DAC.  The PC will have its own flac files, and no internet connection.  Its one and only purpose will be to feed the DAC.

Please advise.

Thank you.

The sound card remains unused in such a setup using USB. It plays no role and may as well not even be present.
