Spin down/sleep external HDD?

Is there a way to make external HDDs attached to the RPI3 based Id Pi go spin down and sleep when not being accessed?

Bump.

Any suggestions on if this is even possible or how to do it? I see no reason why connected HDDs should continue to spin forever when not actually being accessed/used.
