Afternoon guys,

Really enjoying MC23, it's pretty much everything I hoped it would be.  I uploaded some M4P files to my library in the vain hope that MC23 would just play them but alas no.  They show in the library and all the meta data is there so it just seems to be a codec/protection issue.  Is there a way of getting MC to decode them or do I need to do something to the file first before MC will play it.

M4P files are DRM-protected iTunes/QuickTime files. You'd have to obtain DRM-free versions of these files if you can - I believe the iTunes Store gives an option to "upgrade" to DRM-free files (if I recall correctly). It's either that or "upgrading" files through iTunes Match, not sure. Otherwise because of the DRM, iTunes/QuickTime only can play these types of files.

EDIT: iTunes Match is likely your only choice when it comes to obtaining DRM-free versions of files from iTunes.

You don't have to subscribe to iTunes Match or pay to upgrade them, you just have to remove the files and re-download them from iTunes.
I would suggest moving them to another directory rather than deleting them, just in case you are unable to restore them from iTunes for whatever reason (removed from the store etc).
Unfortunately, not all files will be restored as a DRM-free AAC track, some are still being distributed with DRM.
 
For those, the easiest option is to burn them to a CD-RW, and rip the disc.
It's not a lossless conversion but any of the tools I have seen which can strip the DRM from M4P files losslessly are either paid tools or don't seem particularly reputable.

I've had the same problem. Back in the day I've bought a lot of music from the iTunes music store. All with DRM protection.

I ended up buying http://www.tuneclone.com/ to convert the m4p to mp3. Now I have everything DRM free. The reason I bought it was that if I remember correctly Apple charged extra to get the DRM free version of the music I already bought. And the software was cheaper then all the music together.

At one point they did charge you to upgrade to an "iTunes Plus" version of the track that was DRM-free, but that's no longer the case.
The software you bought is essentially doing the same thing as burning to a CD-RW and ripping it, just with a virtual drive instead - so it's not a lossless conversion.
It might be worth checking your iTunes library to see what files can be re-downloaded DRM-free now. If nothing else, Apple are distributing higher quality versions than they used to.
