Upgraded from GT640 to GTX1060 madvr questions
« on: April 18, 2018, 10:41:18 am »

My content is 720p comcast tv channels, a few 1080p channels, and a few 480p channels. I am passing signal through a Denon 4k receiver to a Sony 4k HDR Tv. I do NOT have any need for 3D or HDR. With the GT640, I just used basic settings like output @1080p with cubic scaling. Now that I have the GTX1060 6GB, looking for help/advice.

1. madvr sees the AVR fine. I manually added the Tv, but it has no identification or EDID etc. Is that ok?

2. I have tried the latest nvidia drivers, but run into bad frame dropping and strange exclusive mode issues. So far, I have gone back to 388.59 to get the frame dropping stabilized. Have not tested exclusive mode yet. Is anyone able to run the newer drivers?

3. I bumped chroma/image upscaling to Lanzcos which looks really good to me. Wondering if I can push that some more? Any suggestions?

4. Right now, letting my tv (Sony XBR-Z9D) upscale 1080p to 4k looks pretty darn good. Can the GTX1060 handle bumping output to 4k? Can I leave the desktop at 1080p and make madvr switch to 4k only when playing video? If I do that, does the theater view GUI show up in 1080p or 4k? Exactly what madvr settings need to be changed/added to make that happen? Is it worth it? Should I just leave it at 1080p and focus on scaling/processing?

1. yes - I have LG TV and the EDID came along several weeks/month later.-)

2. I have the latest drivers (GTX 960) - under general settings - I use only Direct3D - no exclusive mode.

3. I have Chroma: Jinc+AR; Image: Lanzcos 3 taps+AR; image downsclaing: BC 50/Catmull Rom, scale in linear light+AR; all trade quality for performance entries disabled. For SD material one could set via a rule to use NGU (my GPU is to week). I let the whole up-scaling do by madVR. I have a lot of Pop/Rock concerts and letting madVR do the up-scaling results in better smooth motions of the artistscompared to let my LG TV do the up-scaling. GTX 1060 should have the capability to do it.

hdr I have set to : passthrough HDR....to the display (You must enable one of the HDR settings on your Sony TV)

Are you running the desktop at 4k? If so, do you put anything in the madVR display modes field? or just leave it blank? and how does the theater view fonts, cover art, and tv guide look in 4k? any problems getting the sizes to look right?

I used to think that my LG OLED did good upscaling from 1080 to 4k. Then a couple nights ago while watching Arrival I was getting banding in the fog scenes. I kept adjusting MadVR setting and only getting minor improvement at best. Finally after the movie I realized that for some reason the computer had booted up into 1080 so the TV was doing the upscaling. Switched the resolution and let MadVR handle the upscaling and all was good. I don't know how I missed that MadVr wasn't doing the work when looking at the CTRL+J settings.

What's the point to all this? I use a 1060 (with an older i5) as well and get great performance on pretty high settings. I just start at the highest and scale things back until I stop getting dropped frames.

Yes ,I am running the desktop at 4k. Theater fonts look good. Cover art also. I don't use TV Guide. I think at this stage I had no problems. PC levels (0-255), 10 bit native display width, this display is already calibrated=on; BT.709 you could also set it to BT.2020 -> depending of the source madvr sets it automatically to BT.709; display modes all off->let MC Video Clock do it; enable gamma processing on. Same curve adjustments as under calibration.

IN MC  I have also set custom display settings. This depends on your TV supported refresh rates!
My settings are:
Film 32 bit @ 23.976 Hz
Film 32 bit @ 24 Hz
NTSC 32 bit @ 59 Hz
30/60 32 bit @ 60 Hz
PAL  32 bit @ 50 Hz

To get black level right I had to set in the NVIDIA Driver : under Change Resolution: Use NVIDIA configs, RGB full.

With the help of madVR forum topic, I am up and running in 4k. Setup three scaling profiles - 1080, 720, 480. Desktop and Theaterview at 4k looks good. Playing with scaling to see what works best.
