Show subtitles only if ...

With respect to subtitles embedded on MKV video, I want to see the subtitles only when the language spoken is different from English, and I've configured MC23 subtitle options accordingly (even having selected my preferred language).  However, subtitles always show as if I've configured for "always show subtitles".  This behavior has been consistent across all recent MC versions.

I'm obviously missing something because the player built into my Sony TV plays the subtitles perfectly. Please advise...
