MC/Madvr Invokes HDR but can't turn off?
« on: March 22, 2018, 04:56:05 am »

Hey guys,

I have MC23 playing 2160/24p files with HDR and the PQ is superb, my TV (LG OLED) shows the hdr logo and at first the picture is blueish and I have to stop the file go back to the menu and then play again, the hdr logo comes up again and then the movie plays fine. Issue is when I stop the movie and MC goes back to theater view menu, the hdr logo comes up again on the TV and the desktop is saturated in colour, it looks like the hdr setting can be invoked (after a stop and start) but can not be tuned off.

I have to close MC and restart to get the desktop colours back to normal.

Any thoughts?

This is a problem with certain graphics drivers. More recent versions may have resolved that, so try upgrading.

Ah ok.

I did a bit of digging and this guy said to roll back but upgrading is also worth a try.  Thanks!

I since updated to latest Nvidia driver and all works fine. I also updated Windows Fall Creator update. Do not exactly sure what fix this, nvidia or Microsoft ... but combination works

Windows Fall Creator

Is this a W10 thing? Im only on W7.
The Fall Creators Update (1709) is the latest version of Windows 10, soon to be replaced by the Spring Creators Update (1803).
Windows 10 receives feature updates roughly every six months, and 1803 is supposed to include further enhancements to HDR support.

If you have a Windows 7 key, I'd strongly recommend that you upgrade to 10 if you plan on using HDR and newer computer hardware.
Though they don't offer free upgrades any more, I've seen people say that Windows 10 will still activate using a Windows 7 key if you use a Microsoft Account.

Ok thanks for the advice. I have been avoiding upgrading my HTPC to W10 as I hate fixing what isn't broken. Are you suggesting that HDR will only function correctly on newer hardware? Apart from this minor issue it plays flawlessly on my current set up.

My set up:
Intel Core i5-3570 16gb ram NVidia GTX 1060 6gb

I can’t say that for certain, as I only use madVR to play back HDR content on an SDR display right now.
But Microsoft do not support HDR on Windows 7, only NVIDIA do via their own HDR API.
Windows 10 has HDR support built into the OS, and it is constantly being improved. My understanding is that it enables you to play back HDR content without having to switch into Full-Screen Exclusive Mode for example.
There are a lot of nice touches like that which make upgrading to Windows 10 worthwhile for media playback.
On top of that, Windows 7 extended support ends in <2 years now, and Windows 10 is a lot more secure at this point.
I’d suggest waiting for 1803 to be released and upgrade or do a clean install then.

One tip for HDR is that when you are done watching a movie is to hit STOP instead of just using the back button. If I just use the back button to get out of a video HDR stays active and everything looks blown out.

I had this problem before when HDR got stuck after movie stop (hit STOP button) ... very annoying ... desktop colour look over saturated

i7 and Nvidia 1070 on Windows 10 is my setup

I solve it initially by rolling Nvidia driver back as described in one of the post. Then manually updated to FCU (fall creator update) and in process updates nvidia drivers. Everything works fine now .. 3D (with some tricks) and hdr

FCU even have 3D and HDR toggle in screen property setting (which I keep off and let MC automatically switch those)

PS ... on latest Windows and Nvidia drivers ... exclusive mode does not work with D3D11 (10bit) on MC (not sure if it’s MC or MadVR)... only D3D9 (8bit) works in exclusive

But great news is ... everything works in Windowed D3D11 mode

Thanks for all the advice guys. I always ensure to push "Stop" after playback but hdr issue still remains. Weird thing is, after upgrading NVDIA drivers manually to latest, the issue went away for one playback. Then 2nd time it was back, very frustrating.

Question: If I update to W10, with my PC specs (Intel Core i5-3570 16gb ram NVidia GTX 1060 6gb) will this be sufficient for Windows to support HDR playback? Or do I need latest spec CPU/Motherboard?

Cheers

Hendrik -can you post the actual driver version?

i have stayed with an old version now out of fear it will break this....  got tired of messing with it, but i am now on drivers from sept 2017.

I had similar issues and resolved them. Under HDR settings in madvr I had manually selected "passthrough hdr content to the display". This was a mistake and caused the HDR to be stuck on and even crash my system once. Using "let madvr decide" resolved all my issues. It enters HDR when your media player is fullscreen and exits when it's not. Simple, effective, and error free.

I do not use "let madvr decide" ... as there is chance MadVR decides to map HDR content to SDR and output to TV ... so "passthrough hdr content to the display" is a way for me

Swing and a miss!

The latest driver works - as well as the previous one I used: still have to toggle 3D on/off in the nVidia CPL when I want to watch 3D.  If I leave it on and playback *anything*, MC23 crashes hard.  Also need to keep using FSE for 3D, so I just leave that on all the time.

At least I know the latest drivers work as well as 385.69; other versions in between not so much...

C'est la vie.  Now it's time to watch Army of Darkness and stop worrying about this stuff :)

But if you are watching hdr content and the HDR logo does not show on your TV then you would know this was happening?

I ditch FSE ... 3D started to work in full screen windowed D3D11 mode (not sure when it started) ... when movie starts, transition to FSW is much more smoother than FSE

only time MC can crash on me is when trying play 2D stuff on FSW with 3D setting on in NVIDIA settings ... to avoid this I set MadVR to automatically toggle 3D setting on/off.

there was a long discussion on Windows FCU failing to toggle NVIDIA 3D setting automatically ... basically MadVR orders Windows to toggle 3D setting ... but Windows fails to force NVIDIA to do so on behalf of MadVR under certain conditions

now a days ... i start my computer in 1080p60 ... let MadVR change my resolution, 3D and HDR automatically ... and when its done return to 1080p60 ... and all works automatically (3D switching and HDR)

Sorry I'm a bit confused, didn't you say that you DO NOT "let madvr decide"?

Sorry for beeing confusing ...

For HDR ... in MadVR i set passthrough

For 3D ... in MadVR [rendering]->[stereo 3D] ... i put when playing 2d content - disable os stereo 3d ... when playing 3d content enable

For resolution ... in MadVR [display mode] ... for 3D i tell MadVR to do 1080p ... for 2D i tell it to do 2160p ... and then force MadVR to restore original display mode after playback (which is 1080p60)

So ... to summerize ... i start my computer in 1080p60 ... and then keep it that way ... MadVR do all resolution, HDR, and 3D switching as per settings ... and always return to 1080p60 after playback

So far it works like a charm ... everything is auto

Ok thanks for clearing that up. I cant imagine running MC or my desktop in 1080p now I have a 2160 panel so that's out of the question. IU alos dont have a 3d panel so thats not an issue.

So I'm back to square 1, I already have madvr set to passthrough and it will not "Turn off" hdr when pressing "Stop".

When I close MC the desktop returns to normal. Are we sure its NVidia thats causing this?

My panel is 2160p too ... 65” e6 oled ... only UI I see on it is Theatre View ... and it looks good enough at 1080p60 ... small price to pay for hassle free movies watching at max quality

Run Winver ... then tell which version of windows you running and which build

Also mention NVidia driver version you running

same Nvidia 391.24

But my Windows is 10 version 1709 (build 16299.309) ... I recommend you update to Windows 10 (i resisted this too ... but no regrets now) ... FCU added better native support for 3D and HDR (see attached screen shot of Windows 10 display setting ... it has controls to turn 3D and HDR on/off)

If you insist on staying Windows 7 ... only thing i can think of is trying to roll NVIDIA driver back to 385.69

Well I rolled back the NVIDIA driver to 385.69 and the issue remained, in addition I completely lost my centre speaker.

Sooooooooo, I went back to 391.24 and everything is back to normal (apart from hdr not turning off after a movie).

Oh and now my desktop icons are all over the place like a mad woman's breakfast.

At least Thor Ragnarok in 4k looks amazing! The colours are a sight to behold.

i’ll give your ideas a try.   seems my missing link would be setting default res to 1080p60.

in windowed mode do you get 10bit color?  what do you set the nvidia control panel color output to?

btw - i have the 2016 model.   as i have said before, 3D is breathtaking on this set.   watch Disney’s The Good Dinosaur or the Hobbit Extendeds....   stunning!   last night we watched The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D.   have a lot of dups now - 4k versions and 3d versions which are almost always imports since they don’t release much 3D in the US any longer

FSW on D3D11 gets 10bit color for both hdr and sdr content press cry+j to confirm this

I don’t think it matters what in NVidia control panel (mine set on 1080p, rgb, 12bit output, 32 but desktop, full dynamic)

Things that matter is in MadVR properties of display ... mine set to 0-255, 10nig or higher, 3D auto, swap left/right uncheck

I really would consider upping Windiws10 ... while still can use old keys to upgrade (you will have to do it eventually as support for W7 ends in 2020)

PS. Actually I hunted down 2x 2016 oled ... e6 and c6 ... shame on LG for dropping 3D :(

i was tempted to buy another LG oled 2016 just to keep in storage.   they are such incredible sets and the 2017 with no 3D is a shame.

can you PM me screenshots of your madVr settings for rendering and device settings?

cheers

I like my 2017 OLED with no 3D. Never liked 3D - always seemed like a gimmick to me. In addition, your only ever seeing half the available pixels at a given time, so whatever the resolution of your set is capable of in 3D the image sharpness will be half what it could be. Am I wrong?

Active 3D doesn't lose any resolution, but it flickers.
Passive 3D is more comfortable to watch, but loses half its resolution.
Since 3D sources are 1080p, and newer TVs are 4K (which is 4x 1080p) you don't lose any resolution on 4K 3DTVs.

I wish they had not dropped 3D support either. I was very tempted to buy one of the 2016 OLEDs just because they were the last model to have it. I'm starting to regret not doing it.

I decided to get new 3D TV at the end of 2016 ... but then thought, I will better get new 2017 model ... by the time this cross my mind in mid 2017, 3D was gone ... barely hunted down 2 panels (both got slight defects ... one has stuck pixel at bottom of screen ... another got slight burns on red channel ... both defects not noticeable unless put on color pattern ... price for getting on this too late)

Coming from Samsung D8000 ... always noticed flickering of active 3D ... gave eye strain ... so 3D was not used much on that

But passive 3D on OLED ... jaw dropping ... for me more impressive than 4K HDR ... no eye strain

watched Wonder Woman last night ... my wife LOVE it

PS. TheShoe ... see attached my MadVR setting screenshots ... DO NOT forget that I am on Windows 10

3D can certainly be a gimmick and not every movie needs it.  when it is filmed as such (The Hobbit) or done in such a way to create a more immersive experience then it is a fantastic tool at a filmmakers disposal.

4K passive OLED 3D is bright while preserving deep blacks, no resolution loss, no flicker.  you don’t have to have as rigid control over ambient light, the glasses are light and plentiful (you can keep your real 3d glasses from the cinema).

3D is dead.  long live 3D!   but no seriously, it’s dead....  sony dropped it too

Ultra-D isn't exactly new (they've been showing at trade shows for like 4 years or so), and glasses-free 3D that actually works with multiple viewers might have helped the tech to really pick-up, but it just never reached mainstream consumer TVs - and now it likely never will. Its unclear to me why it never got sold, perhaps the tech isn't actually working right (yet), or its too expensive for TV makers to license, who knows.

@tij - tried your settings.  so close!  note I am on Windows 10 + fall creators update.

the only issue was that 4K movies always rendered 1080p.  Verified using madVr.

3D, HDR, windowed mode all worked fine, but madVr would scale to 1080p as long as the desktop was in 1080p.  i did check and re-check the settings to match yours, so not sure what else you are doing.  I didn't have specific scripts set up to select profile; I had set up shortcuts to test it and despite telling madVr 2D content is always some 2160pXX mode, it would scale to 1080p.

you are correct - and great find - that if you boot up in 1080p, then the OS and nVidia CPLs each will toggle 3D on/off and affect each other as they should; but if one is in 2160p, then the OS 3D toggle has no effect on the nVidia CPL toggle.

i'd call that a bug, though Windows or nVidia I'm not certain.

oh one other thing: some of my 4K movies, particularly Labyrinth, will exhibit rendering artifacts if I set madVr to PC color levels 0-255.  If I set to Limited, 10bit, then all is fine.  This can be noticed in the opening scene with the cgi owl flying around against a black background.  I noticed this from my PS4 as well in various games.  sometimes it's subtle, other times it's completely distracting.

so desktop is set to RGB/8bit/Full range but madVr is set differently.  setting desktop to 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 and the black level looks washed out as expected.

Did you specify logic for MadVR to decide which setting to use 2D or 3D?

See attached screenshot of my logic ... as I name my 3D files mk3d ... logic is simple for me

Your logic might de different

My money is on Microsoft fault lol

You can make 3D between OS and Nvidia CPL stick in 2160p (TV will not recognize it as 3D as there is no such thing as 2160p 3D ... but CPL will stay in sync) ... on boot ... go to both CPL ... on OS switch on then off 3D ... then on Nvidia CPL change to 2160p ... then in OS switch on then off 3D ... on my system this makes 3D stick between CPLs on any resolution

Problem is ... once 3D is unstuck ... cannot get it back to stick unless restart computer ... AND turning TV off while desktop in 2160p causes 3D unstuck ... that's why I keep my desktop in 1080p60 (even though I can make 3D stick in 2160p ... until turn off TV)

i was going to set that up but figured I could set up a keyboard shortcut for madvr and test first.

the keyboard shortcut caused madvr to display the profile it was using, but it still scaled down to 1080p.

i suppose i can try again; could be once it's rendering, switching profiles has no effect.  that is certainly true trying to enable FSE via shortcut once playback starts.  madvr reports it is in exclusive, but my display never changes.

will give it a shot...

Every time you create profile in MadVR for different scenarios ... you must tell MadVR when to choose each profile

For scaling ... I have profile for every type of video resolution and fps I have (idiotically complex) ... every setting pushes my GPU to max without dropping frame (for DVDs I able to push setting to very high ... on 4k only medium)

so that worked!  my script is slightly different as I have "mvc" as part of the filename whereas extension is still .mkv for 3D and so just used a wildcard on the filename, e.g. "filename = "*mvc*".

it seems that the decision needs to be made when playback starts, and can't be forced after with a keyboard shortcut.

nice.

re: rendering/scaling algorithms.  i've messed with that quite a lot.  i can push the 1080TI pretty hard, but then the fan kicks in and I find it distracting.  i'm sure I can mitigate that, but for another day.

this is pretty cool - i can live with the desktop default res at 1080p for the convenience.

thanks for your help - i recall your other thread on this topic but guess I didn't follow the steps correctly...

We are dying breed of 3D lovers ... with 3D tv gone, we are essentially “extinct in the wild” ... all we can do is help each other lol
