Direct X Problem
« on: June 11, 2003, 09:38:32 am »

This is my second post.  I hope someone can help me.

Is it posible to override MC's directX like Windows Media Player's directX?   I'm using RealMagic's Xcard for displaying music videos (Mpgs and Voe's) on my Tv monitor.  I'm using this card because it displays mpg1 videos at full TV resolution almost at DVD quality, and with 1/10 the amount of RAM Direct X uses.  When I use the direct X method my mpg1 videos starts skipping when I navigate within MC.  MC Direct X uses 30 to 40 percent of Ram vs. RealMagics 0 to 8 percent.  RealMagic is an amazing card and I wish to continue using it with MC. This card has been working great with MC thru 9.0.146.

I was hopeful that the lastest versions of MC would allow me to continue using RealMagic's Xcard just like before.  This card is currently working with Window Media player ver9 so I'm sure MC can do the same.

Here is the error message I get when I try:

"DirectShow. The operation cannot be performed because the pins are not connected."

RealMagic has a control filter so I can turn Direct X on and off for navigating displays to disktop or TV monitor.

If I turn Direct X off, I receive the MC's error message.
If I turn Direct X on, then I can view my mpg files on screen but not my TV.

Here is a description of RealMagic's control filter:

"If you are using DirectX8 and higher, and would like us to handle mpeg1/2/4 playbacks using our filters, please check the box below.  Note that this will rename the quartz dll in the registry.
__ Rename quartz dll to quart dill.xxx "

Can someone please help me upgrade from MC 9.0.146.

P.S.  I love the new release, you guys are the best!

Cindy.

MC uses whatever filters are currently set as the highest priority in the Registry.  If you have Zoom Player this allows you to change the settings to choose which are the highest priority and therfore filter of choice

Hummmm.  Adam.  I installed Zoom.  I can't seem to find the control for Direct X.  ?

I can control the viewing within Zoom / Media Player or TV Monitor using the RealMagic's Filter for direct X.
However I still get the error message with MC.

I just installed 9.1.198 it looks awsome, I can't wait to use it.   I keep having to restore version 9.0.146.  (version prior to Direct X)  :-/

The option to change your filters is the manual filter option in the main options pane.  You have to set the one you want as priority to 80000 I think.  It is a strange system but it works!

Well I tried setting 80000 to All the Sigma Designs(RealMagic's Xcard) files.

Sigma Designs .MP4 file Parser
Sigma Designs MPEG Decoder (IRm)
Sigma Designs Mpeg-2 harward decoder
Sigma Designs PCM Swapper

Still no change in MC.   Then tried changing

JRiver Video Decoder Filter
JRiver Video Encoder 1.0 Filter

Still nothing.

Come on Techs. ?

I'm I going to be stuck using 9.0146 for ever?  I need a solution.  I don't want to go the ATI card way.  I really like Segma's card, and would like to continue using it.

MC should not put limits on what graphic cards is need for viewing video files.  This should be open and available to all cards like other video playing programs out there. (ie. Window Media player, Zoom Player).  :-/

Please come up with a solution so that I can move to a current version of MC.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! ::)

The reason I like Segma Card over ATI is:

1. Visually Sigma's Xcard displays mpg1 format videos at full screen much sharper and clearer then ATI.  I have a fully library of music videos (about 1000) which I enjoy viewing with MC.

2. It auto resizes Mpg1 (320x240) or Mpg2 (720x480) to fit full screen.  I don't have to adjust anything withing MC. It's awesome!

3. Ram use is the main reason.  ATI uses 40% of RAM when playing videos on a TV monitor, Segma uses 8%.

Segma's Xcard is not a graphic card, it's a card that provides high-quality decoding of MPEG-4, MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 content.

I have an ATI on my other computer and you just can't compare the quality and performance for video.

Yeah....  but that's a very expensive card.  Segma is only $100.00

Have you done a test on RAM use?   Does it beat 8%?

I'm using 512 RAM.  So I guess it's 8% of 512.  This leaves a lot more Ram available for MC's programing and displaying of cover art.

I not interested in it for games.

but it has very good graphics and it is fast, when i play Games  (maybe a few times a month) i want it to look not just good but the best. i am sure next year i will dup this card for somthing better.

this is on a 3.06 ghz computer

Well how are you checking to see how much ram it uses?

Why would it use system ram?

Why are you talking about games?  That not related to what is currently my problem.

Play a video mpg1.  Output to a TV monitor then check the ram.  (control,Alt,Delete) on Window2000, I don't know on XP,  in the Window Task Manager go to Performance.  View that while playing a video and navigate within MC.  Look at the variation of ram used while your playing your video.  It could explain system crashes while play MC.

ok, i see what your saying

It is the software video decoder that is pushing the video that is using the ram not the card it's self.

>> Why are you talking about games?
well nothing to do with your problem but

depending on the game you can tell the quality of the graphics the card will generate (Like Quake Unreal Tourniment, Medal Of Honor etc...) All require a better than your fly by night video card. I can care less how much ram it uses as long as the quality is better.

strange you would be seeing problems with the video with the CPU you have, I guess your card don't like DirectX or that the video driver that comes with the card don't like directX.

I wonder if the maker of the video card have seen problems with DirectX and the card, maybe there is a fix or one on the way.

Yeah.. And it was done.  They fixed the problem when "Windows" changed the Media Player to directX on version 9.  Like I mentioned above this card works great with every player except MC.

That makes me believe it's an MC fix not Sigma.

And also the fact:  like I mention above....  it used to work on all MC version thru 9.0.146.  When MC went directX thats when the problems for me started.

Thanks you for trying.

I guess I'll have to settle on 9.0.146 as my final until someone else bring this problem up.:-[

well it also might be hard to fix it if it is DirectX

If they do not have that video card they can't reproduce the problem to maybe fix it if it is MC9.

that might be why you have not heard from them
