MC 24 quits after 5 seconds [Solved]
« on: April 17, 2018, 01:39:52 am »

I just installed MC 24, but it quits after only 5 seconds.  I need help to resolve this. I have no issues with MC 23. I am using OS High Sierra.  Thanks.

I had the same problem.
Choose (if that works before the crash) tools - import and disable auto-import.
That solved my crashing problem.

I've had continuous random crash/freeze with MC 24.  Disabling auto-import did seem to lessen them, but it would be a shame if a new version (with so few actual new features) can only be made to work by disabling an old feature that was useful.

If MC stops crashing after turning off auto-import, chances are you have some bad file(s) which are causing MC to crash.

Auto-import is disabled, so this is not the issue.

Are you running the latest build? (24.0.16)?

Make sure you're using 24.0.16. If it's still crashing, disable auto-import.

Hi.  I deleted Media Center 22 and installed Media Center 24 (24.0.25) on the latest updated version of Mac OS (10.13.4).  It crashed after a minute or so.  I deleted MC24 and reinstalled it and same thing.  Do you have a fix or can you send me a version of MC22 so I can reinstall it.  I use MC every weekend and currently I'm dead in the water.

Let me know if you want the OSX problem report by private e-mail.

Turn off auto import to see if it makes a difference.

My workflow is to buy flac or alac files.  If flac I convert to Alac.  I then add to itunes and have jriver automatically synchronize the folder.    I have a 1.6 ter library and this has worked well for me.

I prefer to go back to MC22 than turn off autosynch.  This problem and the fact that it has not been fixed is really not cool.

The problem may have to do with whatever the program does to check the database when it is first connected.  After running MC22 for 24 hours without a glitch I restarted MC24 and it has now been running for 3 hours without bombing.  Curious.

I had the same problem.
Choose (if that works before the crash) tools - import and disable auto-import.
That solved my crashing problem.
Frank

But when I choose tools - import, the only options I see are:

Import a single folder
Configure Auto-import
Run Auto-import now

There's nothing there about "disabling" auto-import.

I've tried unchecking the boxes under Tools-options-Library & folders but I still have the same problem with the 5 second switch-off. Any further help appreciated.

If there are no folders configured under the auto-import then it's disabled.

If anyone is still having issues with this can you verify you are running the most recent build 24.0.74 please?

OK, mine is 24.0.72 so maybe I need to uninstall and reinstall with .74?

Also, I'm running Roon on a different laptop into the same PS Audio Bridge - but not at the same time, obviously. (I use JRiver for the messily formatted files... 'unofficial' recordings and such like.) Someone told me that JRiver won't work with the Bridge unless I disable Roon on the other laptop first. However , the Bridge does appear as a player on JRiver so maybe that's not an issue. It seems that this 5 second business is all that's holding me back.

There is no need to uninstall before installing another build of MC.

OK, well I just went to the JRiver download page and the version mentioned is the one I've got, .72, not .74 so maybe I'll try a previous version and see if that eliminates the problem.

Right, so I found a .75 version on one of the forums, installed that and still have the same problem.

Also, I really don't want JRiver handling photos and videos, yet despite opting for the Custom install, I could find no options to exclude these, so it went right ahead and grabbed all those as well (having deleted it all on my previous installation).

Sorry to hear that.
You can clear the library under File->Library->Clear
Then under Tools->Options->Libraries and Folders
Uncheck the first two auto import options (I forgot about the one that starts importing everything on an empty library, if the auto-import starts the countdown before you get those unchecked, just cancel  the import).
Then you can just import the single Music folder or set auto-import configuration to that and trigger it when you want.

Thanks Bob, appreciate your advice.

Do you think I'll ever get this to work via my PS Audio Bridge II or will the fact that I have Roon installed on the same network put the kybosh on JRiver (as a friend of mine implied)? I wouldn't want to have to log in to my other laptop and disable Roon every time I want to play something via JRiver on this one, btw.

Thanks again.

It seems to me they should coexist.
As long as nothing else is actively controlling the PS audio bridge it should work.
You will want to tune your DLNA server to it's capabilities. There are plenty of us here that should be able to help with that...

Thanks - any tips welcome!  :)

I'm seeing the Bridge listed on the left of the JRiver interface and it seems to start playing tracks using it, but no sound comes through and after 5 seconds it just stops and the clock disappears. Just like other people described earlier in this thread, except I can't seem to get past it however many times I've tried and fiddled around with settings.

Here's a couple more screenshots - one of  Network settings in JRiver. I still can't work out what that Access Key is for? And SSL? I'm afraid the explanations may as well be written in Greek - I don't have any idea what to do with them. Either way, I selected the 24 bit playback option (which even says PS Audio in brackets).

The other screenshot is of the network settings on my laptop, allowing the Bridge to have access. Not sure what else I have to do to make it all happen.

What is the format of the files you are trying to play (alac, flac, mp3, whatever..).

In Tools->Options->Media Network->Add or configure DLNA servers can you post a screenshot of those settings?

First I suggest downloading 24.0.75 from the first post in this forum.

Next, what is the format of the files you are trying to play (alac, flac, mp3, whatever..).

Also, In Tools->Options->Media Network->Add or configure DLNA servers can you post a screenshot of those settings?

Hi Bob.
Yes, I installed the .75 version yesterday.
The files I want to play are the usual music files: flac, wav, aif, mp3 (And yes, they are all checked in the relevant File Types.)
It will play them fine through the laptop, just not via the Bridge.
Screenshot of DNLA settings is attached.
Incidentally, even someone from a hi-fi shop who knows JRiver inside out was unable to get mine working, hence the conclusion that it had to do with Roon being on the same network.

Ok, I assumed you were using a Mac since we are in a Mac thread.
The Mac build was just released a couple of hours ago.

It doesn't matter in your case.

I would delete the audiophile DAC DLNA server and create a new one using the generic template.
That will change the Audio format to "Specified output format only when necessary"
The default will then convert everything that's not MP3 to MP3.
When that's working you can then tune it in that DLNA server config under Audio->Advanced and select only the formats that need conversion. The rest will be passed through as-is to the BridgeII

My bad - I googled the symptoms and it led me straight here. Didn't think to check beyond that.

You lost me there, I'm afraid. 90% of my files are higher res than mp3 and I wouldn't want to downgrade.

I ran your replies past my local 'expert' who still maintains that I won't be able to use both JRiver and Roon without some fairly irksome resetting of options each time I switch.

I ended up buying a 10 ft 'audio grade' USB cable which I'll run from my laptop into the DAC for periodic listening sessions. For the files I deem worthy, I'll edit the various fields to make them consistent with accepted file naming protocol and then move them over to the Roon library to play via the Bridge. Arduous, but hey...

Thanks for your help in any case.

Sorry about the tech jargon.
The options I gave you were to control what does and doesn't get converted. I just suggested trying mp3 first because everything has to support it.
I also really don't see why the Roon should prevent you from sending DLNA audio to the Dac.

So I tried doing what you suggested in your previous email (see screenshot of new settings) but nothing has changed when I try and play back. If I just press Play the music comes out of the laptop (I was hoping it might at least travel down my new USB cable into my DAC, but not even that!) and if I select Bridge and populate it with files to play it still just plays the first 5 seconds. Is there something else I need to do?

Your settings look good for the DLNA server.
I'm at a loss to understand it stopping after 5 seconds.
It could be useful for us to diagnose if you'd start logging just before starting to play and stop it once the audio stops, then  send us the log.
Logging is under Help->Logging.  The wiki has a topic on Logging.

As for playing to it using USB, you need to change your audio settings (Tools->Options->Audio) to use the DAC as the primary device OR create a new local zone so that you can have separate audio settings for playback on your laptop and playback on your USB DAC.
To create a new local zone use
Player->Zone->Add Zone
