QNAP and JRiver - Revisited
« on: April 19, 2018, 10:28:07 pm »

Hello, JimH, et al.

I know this topic has been discussed and killed several times (I read the other threads and understand the negative opinions on running JRiver on a NAS), but how can you resist salivating at the idea of JRiver running on the QNAP TVS-1282T3:

Features Link: https://www.qnap.com/en/product/tvs-1282t3;

Check out the "Advanced hardware for greater efficiency" and "Perfect storage trio: tiered storage, application-based partitioning & network traffic distribution" sections....

Hardware Specifications Link: https://www.qnap.com/en/product/tvs-1282t3/specs/hardware.

Killer, eye watering specs:
TVS-1282T3-i7-64G: Intel® Core™ i7-7700 3.6 GHz quad-core processor:

Total DIMM slots: 4
System memory: 64 GB DDR4 RAM
Memory modules pre-installed: 16 GB x4
2 M.2 slots, 4 Thunderbolt3 ports, 4 SSD slots,

Software Specifications Link: https://www.qnap.com/en/product/tvs-1282t3/specs/software

Too many JRiver-ready goodies to list!!!

Oooohh!!!  JRiver and the QNAP QNAP TVS-1282T3 duo! What an orgasmic match!

If only this duo could see the light of day....

Here's my approach to make good use of the Qnap attached to my network.

For audio duty:
  • Grab an IdPi
  • Whack on a HAT for audio out and HiFi standard of choice
  • Connect the IdPi to the NAS via Samba share
  • Control via Gizmo or Panel
  • Enjoy the music

I don't need the NAS to serve. I'd expect that if I did, I could get the IdPi to do that job.

If I had a video need, then there are various ways to skin that cat but the basic method above could be modified with suitable hardware in the mix.

Maybe that sort of approach could work for you?

EDIT: When picking out a HAT for an IdPi be wary. Take a look at Idpi and hats - Reply #5. In that post, there are links to other threads relating dev advice and user experience.

I can personally vouch that a HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro and DAC+ Pro work on an RPi 3B running Id:22.0.82 / MC:24.0.19
