Denon HEOS Amp Connectivity Issue
« on: April 20, 2018, 04:32:46 pm »

I have recently added a Denon HEOS amp to my system and have set up the amp properly on my network. I can stream music, play files off my phone vis Blutooth, but seem to have an intermittent issue with accressing my music within JRiver network server. Typically I can get the HEOS to see music files. It takes a few seconds to load them with images and all, and I can click the track to play it with no problems. The issue I am having comes when I am attempting to load a Genre or to view a playlist. Sometimes the track show up in a moment or two. Other times, the playlist or genre does not load and I get an error 519 and then a request to "Try Again". On second attempt, I may have the files appear, or maybe not again. It could take a third attempt. Further, if I want to play this list or genre, I need to have to wait for the "Play All" button to become highlighted at the top of the HEOS App.

I called Denon and they say its a JRiver issue. I have read that others have had connectivity issues with HEOS and that only some servers are fully supported by Denon. Anybody know if I need to change some settings in JRiver to allow for quicker access to HEOS. I am not a techie so not sure if or what might be going on here.

Thanks in Advance.

You will probably have a better experience if you use MC to push to the Denon, instead of trying to get the Denon to pull from MC..

Denon HEOS amp has proprietary App that controls it. I do not believe you can push the music to the amp from JR MC

You may be right.

In which case you are sadly not going to get the best experience from, or usage of, MC.

Just to check / confirm, please try downloading the DMR Analyzer from my sig, run the test against the HEOS, and post the results here..

I am having a lot of problems with JRiver and HEOS, too.  This seems to be an issue worth resolving considering how many people use Denon or Marantz receivers.  I had issues with a new Denon AVR-X4400H that I ended up returning and now have the same issues, but worse, with a new Marantz SR7013.

I have music stored on a Synology NAS.  I have JRiver on a Windows 7 machine in 64 bit.  I use JRemote on an iPad to play music on the stereo.  I had no problems with my old Onkyo.  With the Denon and Marantz, I can no longer fast-forward.  With the Marantz, in particular, there is a significant lag between tapping a control button on my PC or in JRemote and getting a response from the stereo.  For example, if I hit next song, nothing happens for about 3 seconds, then the next song begins to play maybe a few seconds later.  So, it is not exactly "snappy."  Often, it hangs entirely, and I cannot stop music playback on my PC or in JRemote.  I have shut down the programs.  Even then, the Marantz sometimes will turn on by itself and begin playing again!  If I manage to pause a song, it goes back to the beginning when I hit the play button to resume.

I downloaded WhiteBear DMR Analyzer and will post test results in a separate response.  The only changes I made per the analyzer were to uncheck "DLNA" and "DLNA Extras" under Add or Configure DLNA Servers / Advanced.  This change made no difference in performance.

Denon has done quite a few software updates since I had posted my connectivity issues. The HEOS App is truly the only  way you can control playback on your Denon/Marantz device. Nowadays, I do not get any time out errors anymore and can only use the playlists I have in JRiver. No play doctor which is a bummer, but I have a workaround. Heos allows you to take genres and add them as "next playing" in a shuffle.  As previous poster mentioned, you can not use JRiver to push to your HEOS device reliably. It works sometimes and then other times NOT. :-\

joetiii are you using one of the stand-alone HEOS products or a Denon AVR?

I usually use MO 4Media to push to my Denon 4300 and don't have any issues. Maybe some skip track lag, I can't remember right now and can't test until later. Using the Denon apps is a bit of a chore and I avoid it.

Here is my WhiteBear test report:

...

That report is for a Marantz renderer, so I am not sure what it has to do with the OP’s question??

Here is my WhiteBear test report:

DMR Report (by Whitebear) for Marantz SR7013
============================================

UPnP Device Type=urn:schemas-denon-com:device:AiosDevice:1

Play test file result=Play failed => Start Ok / Time out

DLNA=Off

But anyway, the above three lines show that the renderer failed the test...

1) it is not a standard UPNP renderer device type (it declares itself as an AiosDevice ??)
2) it did not report a proper PLAYING state change when the test file was pushed at it
3) it did not declare itself to be DLNA compatible

Regarding point 2) you might try the setting in MC “Disable Transport Events” but I am not confident that it will solve your problem..

Marantz and Denon merged a while back...they may share the platform?
