I've been an OpenGL fan since the days of GlQuake and Voodoo I and Voodoo II "3D Accellerator" cards by 3Dfx.  But I'm no expert on 3D APIs so I defer to those who use them intimately.  Like John Carmack -- who I believe has stated that Direct3D has essentially caught up to OpenGL (of course I can't find the posting).

But, if JRiver is interested in porting MC to non-Windows platforms it could do itself a favor and avoid DirectX when possible.

I've read the same thing...maybe DX9 is nearly as capable (MS has "borrowed" things from OpenGL). Articles I've read say that OpenGL is still more efficient than even DX9...and the OGL standard is not standing still. If there indeed will be a Linux version then JR ought to bite the bullet and switch to OpenGL now...before their DX implementation becomes too entrenched. This could apply to their reliance on IE as well for ordering MC and for plug-in downloads. I'm using Moz Firebird (not exclusively though...I do like IE though MS's inability to fix the transparent 24 bit png issue is quite annoying).

Still looking for more cool screensavers...will post links.

I am slowly falling in love with Mozilla Firebird.  I have been using it at work and although it is still only at 0.6 it is amazing...  The extensions too like Mouse gestures make it fantatsc and with the built in pop up and ad blocking well... and its free.  does evrything opera does and doesn't cost a penny :)
