DSD play through DLNA to Receiver (Title edit)
« on: April 24, 2018, 03:02:35 am »

Hi JRiver experts,

I am newbie for JRiver Media Center Version 24.
My PC is connected to Denon AVR-X4400H receiver through HDMI cable.
And I have no problem with direct play whatsoever type through this HDMI, means, through WASAPI connection.
But it means DSD format converted to PCM and play.

But when I play to... receiver (I enabled Media Server and it shows my device), it only play hiss noise.
Some other setting, my receiver shows "Unable to play".
And I never see my receiver shows "DSD" indicator lit even my receiver has DAC which is capable of DSD decode and even "DSD" indicator is on the screen.
Through DLNA, or HEOS, or directly play to device from JRiver, I can't play .dsf type except only through WASAPI.
Is there any valid setup for direct play .dsf(DSD) format file through DLNA/HEOS?
Not through WASAPI device, because it automatically change DSD to PCM. I would like to hear original unchanged source....
Please help me.

DSD through HDMI is, as far as we know, not supported from a PC. Basically, the graphics card that controls your HDMI is responsible for supporting the audio format you want to play, and DSD does not appear to be one of them.

Yes, I aware of that.
That's what I ask about DSD playback through "DLNA/HEOS" connection.
With Media Server enabled, I can send .dsf file to my receiver through network.
With this play method, I only can hear hiss noise, or "unable to play" on the receiver screen.
So, my question is, what is correct setting for enable DSD format play on my receiver through JRiver Media Server?

Check in the wiki the part about DSD Over DLNA.

Firstly your post title is misleading if as you are already aware that you cannot play DSD through HDMI.

To stream DSD from MC via DLNA:
Go to Tools>Options>Media Network>Add or Configure DLNA Server> Select Your Server from the list>Select Audio Mode:Original

Try these settings, if this does not work then on the same Tab go to Advanced>Tick or untick Bitsteam DSD and try again.

(I know this needs to be unticked to work with my Oppo 203)

It is worth noting this does not work with SACD ISO files.
The tracks need to be individual .dsf files if you want to stream them over DLNA.

Oh yes, I just know that,,, sorry for my title, I changed it  ;D
And I always Check "Bitstream DSD", but I will uncheck this item and test again today!
BTW, what is different check/uncheck this option??? It looks like that uncheck is to convert DSD to PCM, not original DSD bitstream, no?

I think one setting is to send native DSD (unchecked?) and the other is to send DSD over PCM (DoPE).
NB DSD over PCM is not converting it to PCM but just packing the DSD data in a way that it looks like PCM so that it can be transmitted through systems that don't natively support DSD and then if the receiver supports DoPE it can unpack the data as the original DSD.

If when you send DSD to the receiver you hear a hiss noise it sound to me like you are sending DSD as DoPE (DSD over PCM) and your receiver does not understand DoPE so plays it as a PCM stream i.e. just noise.
The specifications of your Denon says it does support DSD over the network but doesn't say which particular version so I am guessing it is as native DSD rather than DoPE so hopefully unticking the Bitstream DSD box will make it work.

Wow, that's really convincing and promising! I will check it when I'm home.
My Denon Receiver is AVR-X4400H, and about DSD, it only says -

"Playback of DSD and FLAC files via USB and networks -
This unit supports the playback of high resolution audio formats such as DSD (5.6 MHz) and FLAC 192 kHz files. It provides high quality playback of high resolution files."

and other site show the detailed specification like :

DSD via HDMI : 2-CH/Multi-CH input
DSD via USB : 2-CH
DSD to PCM Converter : Not support

I think that last one means Denon AVR-X4400H does not support DoPE.
You can see attached picture.

*** but there is "DSD via HDMI : 2CH/Multi-CH input", probably it is error, isn't it?

DSD over HDMI is supported in many receivers, just not from a PC. DSD over HDMI works from a SACD player. Most SACD players with HDMI were designed to do that.   As Hendrik said, it is the HDMI driver/graphic card in the PC that is the issue with DSD over HDMI from a PC.

Receiver manufacturers could make DoPe work, but they have generally not done so.
