Too much volume - help:)
« on: May 04, 2018, 02:03:43 pm »

I just bought a new dac. I love it but it is seriously loud when run to my preamp then to my amp.
Everything I read says to keep the volume of dac all the way up to get a bit perfect stream from the dac.

As is, I can only turn the preamp to 9 or 930 before it gets too loud (with JRiver volume disabled).
The goal is the purest sound. Is there a safe way to knock down the volume in JRiver while maintaining the quality/integrity of the audio stream?

Thanks

Use JRiver's volume.  There is a wiki topic.

Media Center's internal volume control is 64-bit so quality is not a concern.
You can use the internal volume control to adjust the volume, but you may prefer to use a fixed offset by adding a volume reduction to the Parametric EQ in DSP Studio.

The one thing to watch out for is that dither should be set to TPDF (it really should be the default setting).
Tools > Options > Audio > Advanced > Dither Mode: TPDF

I have a pair of these between my DAC / Pre and power amp.

I had the same problem as you. Have a read of the page and it explains the issues.

Solved the issue for me
