Volume Levelling via Panel
« on: May 24, 2018, 09:31:50 am »

Is this even possible? If not - will it ever be?

I see little use for this utility if I have to run over to the PC and keep futzing with the volume slider every time a song mastered in the last 10 years comes blaring out of the speakers at a dinner party.

Hoping there is some facility to make this work.

If you're playing to your device, it depends on what the browser does.

If you're playing to MC, then MC should control it.

Of course - if MC is in play - then volume leveling is built in.

I am talking about using Panel to fire up a playlist from a browser. Not exactly getting how the browser would influence volume levelling tho.

But for arguments sake - let's say it's an iPad running Chrome. Can Panel volume level a playlist for this device or not?

This is essentially a request to control the DSP used for Gizmo devices.
So MC would transmit an already-leveled track to the device, rather than relying on the device to apply volume leveling.
I believe that's already an option for DLNA devices, but there's no control over the DSP used for Gizmo devices.

As I suspected. Thanks for the update!

I don't know of a way to do that.  When you're using Panel and playing to that device, you're using the browser for playback.  You could read about HTML5 if you need to know more.

Doesn't Media Center already transcode to MP3 for that? JRemote has that option.
This would be to enable volume leveling when transcoding files.

Seriously? I thought JRemote completely bypassed any of the "Media/Network/DSP" type features that I can set on the server.

The only reason I was asking about Panel - is that using JRemote to listen on a device (like my iPhone etc) is just as useless as Panel - since there is no ability to use Volume Levelling.

I simply cannot tolerate any playlist that hits me with wild volume swings. This is annoying me to the point where I am getting very close to creating a separate audio folder with copies of every track been physically level-altered (using Wavelab) to ensure the volume is exactly where I want it - something reasonable like say -14LUFS.

Hoping I do not have to do that - but the patience has almost run out.

It is set in the app, not on the server.
You can only enable transcoding and select a bitrate - no other DSP options.
Since it is transcoding files, it does not seem unreasonable that volume leveling could also be applied.

Media Center can do an offline conversion and apply volume leveling. You don't need other tools for it.

Tested this - it does not apply any volume leveling.

Might have to move to some offline conversion.

Sorry if that was not clear. I'm not saying that it does apply volume leveling, I'm saying that it could, since it is already transcoding the files.
It would need an option to transcode with leveling applied though (and I'd prefer transcoding to a lossless format).

Is there any plan to implement DSP volume leveling on Panel or Gizmo?
