Hi, I have a thread running on the Mac MC23 board but thought I'd move it here because it now refers to MC24 and also because no one is responding there: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,115891.0.html

Originally I was running MC23 (Mac) but am now running MC24 (Mac) following suggestion by JimH.

Currently MC24 is crashing when I try to import/update my library using file/library/import/configure auto-import.

Here is the crash report - it's 5mb in size so I have uploaded to MEGAlink:

Please help, I've followed all advice so far from JimH and Awesome Donkey but it's still crashing constantly.

After a crash, look at the bottom of the previous log for files that are being imported. You may have some corrupt files. If you find one, we'd like to see it.

There are a couple of spaces in front of the Discographies folder in this path:

Hi Jim,

Yes, the spaces are so a particular file folder always sits at the top of other folders when I sort by name (when using 'Finder' on my mac).

Do the spaces cause problems and do I need to remove them?

It would be worth a try. It's unusual to have spaces in a folder name.

Spaces at the 'front' of a folder name you mean right?

Not in normal names etc like 'James Brown' or 'Tom Petty' I'm guessing?

It is unusual, yes. I wouldn't recommend using periods either, since macOS will hide folders with names starting with periods in Finder.

So my library import completed - took 22 hours inc thumbnails etc.

A few hours later after not touching since the import, I clicked on the 'audio' tab on the left of the screen and MC24 crashed

I've pasted the end of the crash report below. The full zip of the crash report is 62mb, please let me know if uploading it here via MEGAlink would help.

P.s. I've repeated this a number of times now. I can complete an 'auto-import' but if I click a name from the sidebar menu (audio, file, artists etc) MC24 crashes. However, if I click the arrow next to the previously mentioned tabs, it works fine...

I'd set the log to rotate so you don't get those huge log files.
Also, when MC crashed I assume you got the usual crash report for apple. Can you email me a copy? bob (at) jriver (dot) com ?

How do I set the log to rotate?

I've just emailed those Apple crash logs to you - there are 3 - I'm not sure which one exactly matches the MC24 crash log I attached earlier but they are all within 2 minutes of the crash file. I think I must have restarted MC24 a couple of times to test and it crashed again both times.

Thanks for sending the files, I'll take a look at them on Thursday.

The log rotation is in the logging option under help, there is a maximum size which will rotate 2 logs...

Ok, it's crashing in a list control.
Can you email a copy of your library? You can find them under the documents directory.

Hi Bob,

Since your last message I've been tidying up my library and also editing any folder names that begin with a space and replacing it with a number.
I'd been using spaces to help keep certain folders at the top of a list but numbering makes much more sense and seems to have stopped most of the crashing issues.

Do foreign characters (also some special characters) in file names cause issues? I've started editing any that I come across whilst tidying my library but wondered if it's worth pursuing?

I've now updated the library a couple of times and there have been no crashes whilst updating/importing and most recently I could press menu tab names and their arrows (audio, file etc) with out causing a crash for a while but eventually it did crash after browsing through a selection of the fields.

I can understand that the size of the library could be causing problems but things definitely seem to be moving in the right direction.
I've attached the latest crash log and will also post the last few lines below.

Re the library file I'll upload it to MEGA today and post a link here.

Thanks again for your help. I'm really looking forward to getting everything working and enjoying my music via JRiver

Also, I can't get JRemote on my iPad to sync with my updated/corrected library.

I've reset my Macmini, restarted the app on the iPad, tried disconnecting and reconnecting but it still shows the old file structures...

Any ideas?

P.S. I've realised that as well as JRemote sync issues, also the MC24 files menu tab (on left of screen) still shows one of the drives that I removed from the library. This is even though I've re-imported the library fully 3 or 4 times since removing that drive.

I've now cleared the library and am going to re-import everything again

JRemote is now showing the library correctly as it starts to populate the library with the first drive I have added to the clean library.

I had originally been using MC23 (link here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,115891.0.html),
which I'd bought a licence for but couldn't get to work without crashing.

In the previous thread JimH suggested trying MC24 which is where we are at now.

However I'll have to buy a new licence for MC24 when MC23 has never worked for me properly. Is there any way to transfer for the licence to MC24?

This was apparently causing the problem with MC23. It's not clearly a problem with MC, but with the spaces, so MC23 should work if you rename the folders.

Hi Jim,

Yesterday I went back to MC23 and updated the library (with fixed folder names - no spaces). The update took about 16 hours and just finished.

I clicked the 'Audio' tab and MC23 crashed - just as before and the same as MC24 currently does until the new fixed build is released (the one which Bob mentioned).

What should I do now?

I think the problem is with the folder names, not the library. Do they still have spaces?

The past few days I triple checked my library for problematic folder names and tried MC23 yet again. It still crashes.

Every time I've done this I've cleared the library and re-imported the whole library which takes around 16 hours due to library size. I've done this to avoid any possible issues with remnants from old files/part files etc.

I then went back to MC24 and it lasted a little longer before crashing - i.e. I can click the tabs quite a number of times before triggering a crash.

So I've been testing for a few days with MC24 and it's remained stable - no crashes so far

MC23 still crashes in the same manner as before when using exactly the same folders and library as MC24.

I might be missing something but as MC23 has never worked for me can I please transfer my licence to MC24?

This latest version of MC24 is the only one that has worked for me.
