Who Should Upgrade to MC24 ?
« on: June 10, 2018, 03:29:38 pm »

I have the latest MC23 version which I believe is the 64 bit version.. I just stream my downloaded music files via ethernet to listen to music.. I checked to see what MC24 has to offer and I see nothing to improve my own experience.. Am I missing something ? Just stick with MC23 ? I always like to have the latest tech but there's a saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it".. I probably might/would just do it anyway but worried I might mess up something with the new download.. I'm not tech savy at all and not being able to call someone makes the upgrade decision say nah..

This is an old sticky thread, but could help you decide when to upgrade:

The latest stable build could be a nice compromise between new features and stability.

But keep in mind, nothing should break if you upgrade. In fact, the MC23 => MC24  switch was completely glitch free for me and I think for many others.

I just did 5 workstations and a server this past weekend - no major probs except my usual pet peeve - any MC install that acts as a "client" does not retain settings when upgraded. So I had to spend about 5 minutes per workstation configuring each client.

I thought I could backup library settings on a client but I see that I cannot. Unless someone has a tip for me?

i'm in a similar position. having just purchased mc24 two months ago and now seeing upgrade offers. booo. my thinking a purchase of a windows license was for a 'lifetime'. bummed. but yeah my own fault for not researching the license thing i guess  :(

i ditched itunes for mc24. i use dbpoweramp to rip any cds i buy. so i use mc24 for

airplay (music files and radio streams) to 2 speakers via tuneblade
tagging a little
syncing my music to my walkman

that's pretty much it. everything works just as i want it to now. cosmetics are good with mc24 so not fussed about future cosmetic upgrades.

but i do wonder just how long everything will continue 'to work' before i have to pay more to upgrade?

It is, for that major version of MC (MC24 in this case) you can use for a lifetime with no limits. There's just no more development or updates to it once the next major MC version is released. I'd say we're close to the end of the development of MC24.

Upgrades are not mandatory, they're optional. If you're happy with the current version of MC you're using, then don't upgrade. If you want to support JRiver and development of MC and/or there's a new feature added in the next major MC version, then consider the upgrade. It's that simple. :)

I believe in supporting the development of MC so I always take advantage of the pre order discount when a new version is announced. I figure that it costs less than $2.00 a month to have the latest program. One thing I do is wait a couple of months after the new version is released to download so most of the bugs are worked out. I just bought the MC 25 upgrade and I will wait till about June to download it unless there is something new that I just gotta have. Like has been said no one is twisting any one's arm to buy the update. I just feel that it is a small price to pay for this great Media Center Program.
