MC 24 repeating crash
« on: June 15, 2018, 04:28:21 am »

Hey gang! MC 24 is very nice, and I didn't have a problem with it until recently.

I'm getting a daily crash, sometimes more, where just by sitting idle MC 24 stops working. I get "MC 24 has stopped working and must close", but the PC is idle most of the time this happens (I'm not on the computer often because I work too much, so is often idle). After searching the forum, I noticed that the issue may be related to Antivirus programs.

As it is, I didn't have logging turned on all this time, but it's monitoring the program now. I'll upload a log file as soon as the behavior repeats itself.

I'd recommend enabling logging and see if there's a bad file auto-import is trying to import, causing MC to crash. Most of the time, this is the reason for MC crashes.

Antivirus programs can be an issue too, yes. What antivirus are you using?

What version are you running?  24.0.34 is at the top of this board.

Look at the bottom of the previous log.  You should see "crash".  See what is happening just before (file names, etc.).

I've noted the antivirus notes on the forum, so I am aware that it might be the cause. I am using Norton along with Malwarebytes. Generally I don't have problems running them in the system, but there could be something.

I am running MC 24 v30 64-bit (latest Stable) but do you recommend installing the latest release? I used to update that way, but have been staying on the official release channel since updating to 64-bit earlier this year. I'm going to update to the one posted (I think v34).

I did have a crash this afternoon, but the file is too big to upload (28K) here.

No need to send a log unless we ask for it.
One AV program could do it. Two is almost certain to cause a problem.
Always try the latest build if you have a problem.

I installed MC 24 v34 today. Will check on it over the next few days.

MC 24 is still stopping with v34. It stopped twice over the past couple of days, one of them while I was using it. MC audio stuttered and had to repeat buffering before it stopped working.

My music drive is an external USB3.0 WD portable that is still Mac formatted (from when I used to run MC on the Mac as the MC server) and have not updated the software for MacDrive. I am going to do update the program today. I've been using the drive for two years on the PC; usually the PC sees the Mac drives fine. Eventually I am going to clone the music volume on an NTFS formatted drive but that is in the near future.

How about active antivirus scanning? Would one of my programs interfere if it was doing a background scan?

My system has 12GB RAM with room for expansion. I'm running Windows 10 Professional 64-bit -- I'm not sure which version is running, but it's either on the Creator or Spring update.

I have the log file to generate if needed.

The MC behavior is not all that annoying to me. I'd like to track down the cause though.
