Id Not Finding Music Library
« on: May 19, 2018, 07:11:49 am »

I've had the Id for a few years, and after some bumps getting started it was smooth sailing thereafter.

More recently, two things have happened that disrupted my musical tranquility...

1) I converted my NAS-based music library from AIFF to FLAC so the library would work better with my Chord Mojo/Poly DAC/streamer. The FLAC library is placed in the same "folder" with the same IP address.

2) I had some system failures with my Synology NAS. I had to reinstall the OS and was advised by Synology that the drive may be failing but it appears stable right now. I am working with Western Digitial to test the drive.

So now, MC on the Id is unable to find my media library. Besides the two items above, everything else is the same. Here is an image of my Id share path and MC's media import screen:https://drive.google.com/file/d/13-pRlaLxOYHg15L_4z10T9OX3ARxyHyH/view?usp=sharing

Both remain unchanged and are in alignment with the guidance I received that is documented in this thread:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,110106.msg761934.html#msg761934

What changes do I need to make to bring MC back?

You might need to set up auto import again.  You may not be importing the FLAC files.

On the NAS itself, double check where the files are.  They may not be in the same location.

I tried the auto import but that did not do it. I was a bit unclear about the location of my music files. My FLAC files are parked in the same "music" folder as my old AIFF files were in. After calling Synology, they suggested that I might need to map the location on the Id. So, with some trepidation, I went into
  20 External Media Menu
  11 Delete

and deleted the music share:
  1  //198.168.1.9/music      /mnt/music     -orw,guest

then attempted to add a new music share:
  Path to the share    //mnt/music
Directory name on this machine    [my local Synology NAS name)
  Is the //mnt/music on a Windows computer (y/n)?  n
Should [my local Synology NAS name] be Read-Only or Read-Write (ro/rw)?   I tried both
Access //mnt/music as the guest user (y/n)?     y
Checking to see if we can access //mnt/music
  Failure

I struggled with this for a long time when I first set the Id up. Can I get some direction on how to reconnect and if this is what you mean by checking where the files are?

I think you're using the wrong 'Path to share.' If you use //mnt/music, it's going to look for //mnt on your network. You need to give it the network location. It looks like last time you used //198.168.1.9/music (I'm guessing that was meant to be 192 though), but the IP address might have changed.

I tried a number of variations and discovered a few new things. Every configuration of using the IP address in the Id menu didn't work. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EOUMdOVezplVqTDZDZr-NlHM-WzwhsfX/view?usp=sharing I'm using the same IP address that I connect my Chord Poly streamer to my network (using that now as I type), so that should be good. I also tried the IP address that is in an image earlier in this thread.

I then went to the MC menu and I selected the BouvierWeinberg library, and here I am able to see and play my music files. BouvierWeinberg is the name of my NAS. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_V2nFmhjS9GqWcQbPEfRYWMirfkZ9swI/view?usp=sharing However, I am unable to see any of the music filters (recent albums, sample rate = 192K, etc.) and I'm unable to see my digitized liner notes in JRemote. All those features are available to me when using the non-working Main Library. I will be able to get the Main Libary only when I connect it to /mnt/music. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xHuSsT-cdpaeC8bjYZu2u1OrhqSRAC34/view?usp=sharing

Advice on next steps? Thanks.

You will need more than just the IP and the root directory, you need the name of the share as well.
You had:
//192.168.1.2
you need something like
//192.168.1.2/music
like you had in your previous example.

When you select the BouvierWeinberg library from the device tree, you are selecting a DLNA library. DLNA is limited in what information it provides to MC which why you can't see the liner notes, etc when you connect in that fashion.

I tried that with the following IP: 192.168.1.2  That is the IP that I use to connect my Chord Poly streamer to my network, so I think that is the correct address. It spun for a few seconds (that is good) but was ultimately rejected:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KMtdZjFmNtVPtTyn35Z3BEUzvyXbyMgx/view?usp=sharing

Please advise.

Do you have another windows computer? If so, check to see if you can access that share from another windows computer (with the /'s reversed to \'s of course).
Brad says that the last windows updated messed up his sharing settings. You should check that your network connection is still listed as private and that sharing is on.

Not fully certain I understand what you are asking. I went to a Windows computer, found the NAS where my music library resides, and I am able to see it. I went to Advanced Sharing Settings, scrolled down to expand the all networks category of settings and turned on the share.

Is that what you were asking me to do?

After reading over the thread again, I'm not sure the right IP address is being used. You want to use the IP address for the NAS when mounting it. Have you tried setting 'Path to share' as //BOUVIERWEINBERG/music?

Agreed. I suggest running a utility like Nirsoft's Wake Me on LAN, so that the op can confirm that they're dealing with the correct network detail.

I was able to positively identify the Id's IP address.  From the Id's main menu, I selected 11 - show network information. I was able to match the hardware address from the Id to the MAC address on my router. I then shut down the Id and the router icon switched from active to inactive. When I turned the Id back on, the router icon switched back to active. With that done, I can now say my Id's IP is 192.168.1.172

I then went back to the Id's main menu and selected 20 - external media menu and then to 10 - add a network device. I played around with different configurations, but nothing worked. So...

Path to the share -- //192.168.1.172/music          Music is the directory of the NAS where my music library is stored

Directory name on this machine -- BouvierWeinberg          This is the name of my NAS

Is the //192.168.1.172/music on a windows computer (y/n)? -- n          I said no

Should BouvierWeinberg be Read-Only or Read-Write (ro/rw)? -- ro          I said read only

Access //192.168.1.172/music as a guest user (y/n) -- y          I said yes

Response - Failure           ?

I still have my video connection active. It is https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pol4fmtFJtU-EJTFIgs1dg7eNM3sOfXV/view?usp=sharing.

That has the mnt which is where I started from and why I use that as a model.  When I use mnt/music as the path, the Id churns for ~ five seconds after answering the guest user question and responds with:
"Checking to see if we can access //mnt/music". Somewhat hopeful for the five seconds and then the Id responds with "Failiure"

What to do? Is there a factory reset and if so, can I get some guidance on how to set up the Id out of the box?

Did you try using //BOUVIERWEINBERG/music for 'Path to share?' I believe that should have worked.

If the video directory is still mounted on the Id, then the latest screenshot indicates that the IP address you want to use is 192.168.1.9 which would appear to be the IP address of the NAS. For 'Path to share' try using:

//192.168.1.9/music
or
//BOUVIERWEINBERG/music

Either one should probably work.

I tried both (and think I may have tried them earlier when I was trying many different configurations). Both were no good. Running out of options here. What to do?

Can you still access the mounted 'videos' folder in the Id? If so, that means the IP address is right.

The next step is probably checking the NAS to make sure the music folder can be accessed as a guest. If you had to rebuild the OS, it seems possible the permissions changed.

So in the Id set up, when I am asked to access "as a guest user (y/n)", it sounds from your question that I should answer yes and enter my Synology NAS user ID and password. That was not clear to me before (and I don't think I did it before but could be mistaken).

If that doesn't work, is there a way to wipe the Id and start from scratch?

Regarding the IP, I did identify it as 192.168.1.172 on my router, but I think the video directory is still linked (but maybe not) with a different IP, so that may need some more work on my part. My other recollection was when I set up the Id the first time, I entered "mnt/music" and "mnt/video". But there was a lot of learning during that process.

I believe you mentioned that 192.168.1.172 was the IP address of the Id. If that is correct, you do not want to use this IP address. The 'Path to share' needs the IP address of the Synology NAS.

Let's focus on the access as a guest option because I believe that might be the problem. I don't think the Id is the problem, so there should be no need to revert it.

If you had to reinstall the OS on the NAS, it sounds like the music folder on the NAS might have lost the permission configurations. Log into the Synology NAS and check the permissions for the music folder. Make sure that it is a shared folder and that it can be accessed by guests.

All good and logical tips.  Here is what I did:

I believe you mentioned that 192.168.1.172 was the IP address of the Id. If that is correct, you do not want to use this IP address. The 'Path to share' needs the IP address of the Synology NAS.

Good first step- I used the NAS IP of 192.168.1.9 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JSBFQxNQAItfUrnqXJUKM3QD6VA3X83J/view?usp=sharing

If you had to reinstall the OS on the NAS, it sounds like the music folder on the NAS might have lost the permission configurations. Log into the Synology NAS and check the permissions for the music folder. Make sure that it is a shared folder and that it can be accessed by guests.

I called Synology for some guidance and changed the share drive for guest to read only. I also tried read write, but thought that would be less advisable.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W94tChGJx7FI8O9_bvlSXvx4XOBNp_Is/view?usp=sharing

More specifically to your guidance, I checked the share properties in the music folder:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-s-6EdcrpehgWJXSMFN15F8cKrhqKYpc/view?usp=sharing

Unfortunately, I got the same results:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GcbAwB0mKuSmBs1A0E_CJ6Tf-nxU5lZA/view?usp=sharing

Thought your suggestions might do it. Standing by for next steps. Thanks for the guidance so far.

Okay, 192.168.1.9 looks like the right IP address, so Path to share looks right.

If the video folder is still mounted properly, you should be able to play files from that folder on the Id. Have you tried playing any of these files? If they work, you might check the video folder on the NAS and compare it to the configuration of the music folder.

I haven't used a Synology NAS before so I am not familiar with them. Is 'guest' a default user or did you have to manually create a user called guest?

One other thing you could try doing is mounting it using the admin credentials to see if that works.

Brad (and others),

I'm going to be on business travel the next two weeks, and will attempt to get the Id back on line when I return. I'm posting this to let you know I am still interested in resolving this, but will do so when I'm back.  Until then, thanks for the assistance.

I'm back and hoping to get this thing running. Picking up from BradATIMA‘s post, I am now not sure if the videos are even there.

Here is my Display Configuration: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10bkAZO16wr1QKWtOwN0abOVHW2ZWJWVC/view?usp=sharing
And my Display Status: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hPxTVkVElMaBbvCi-243FSk9K2VFHCHl/view?usp=sharing

When the Id worked for me before, the syntax was the same for music and video as it appears for the videos in the Display Configuration. I’m not really sure how to proceed to resolve this now, but would appreciate further guidance.

From the look of the screenshot, the video folder doesn't appear to be mounted either.

I'm not sure how your NAS is handling the guest account. One thing you can do to test is try mounting the music folder, but use 'n' when it asks about accessing as guest, and try using the username and password for the admin user on the NAS. Don't post any screenshots that might reveal this information.

Brad,

I'm pleased to report that the Id now works. For the longest time, I didn't realize that the Id "guest" user was linked directly to the user account on my NAS. With that insight from your last post, I created a new "JRiver MC" user with a unique password on the NAS, and then used that ID and PW on the Id, and it worked  :)

What is strange is that when I began to import my library it happened really fast, so that seems to me to be a bit odd. Also, my digitized liner notes are not yet visible when playing tracks on JRemote as documented here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,92389.0.html

Nevertheless, now that the Id is able to talk to my NAS, I can now begin to rebuild some of the other features that I enjoyed before the crash. Many thanks to you and others for stepping me through the process.

David
