I updated two Folder.jpg files with larger sized JPGs (300x300 to 500x500; not very large). After doing this and while currently playing music in Playing Now, I clicked rebuild thumbnails for All Files.

This is the latest available version 24.0.41.

I am trying this same exact thing once more. The main MC24 app totally freezes while the rebuild thumbnail dialog moves. However, it appears music continue to play in another thread. The music actually even continued for some time while it became unresponsive.

I just reproduced the issue. The dialog is now gone with the main app frozen. Windows is again showing the app is unresponsive. However, music continues to play...

This is a defect.

After the song that was playing finished, there is now silence.

What location have you set for MC's library files (the database, not the media files)?

My library is the default Windows 10 location unchanged:

C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 24\Library

The app has full read/write permissions here. I use only Windows 10 built-in virus protection and no third party anti-virus at all.

If you select Tools>Advanced tools>Build missing thumbnails for your NAS library do you get a similar hangup? I have just started that action on my NAS library and it is merrily chugging it's way through 19000 files with no problem.

I just went through all of this to reproduce the same issue. This seems to be something new, because I have done this same thing numerous times with zero problems. I will try rebooting after adding all the exclusions. MC24 starts scanning then simply hangs followed by Windows reporting the app being unresponsive. Again, I have done this many times to never encounter this issue.

While MC24 is hanging, I see activity from my NAS, so it is doing something in the background. The app is simply frozen though and will eventually cause Windows to report that it is unresponsive. See Task Manager screenshot while it is rebuilding thumbnails. It is using CPU but hogging the entire thread. This is looking more and more like a bug. Not releasing cycles to Windows and consuming it all.

If that was the case why does mine work without a problem. Have you tried the build missing thumbnails test I suggested?

Eventually it stops everything and remains frozen with no read activity at all from my NAS. This is when Windows reports it is unresponsive. It appears to be unresponsive as far as Windows is concerned even at the start of rebuilding thumbnails. Minutes later it totally freezes.

After a reboot, I see the same behavior and crash. Windows Task Manager again showed the app being unresponsive during the thumbnail rebuild (I think this is the root cause of the issue -- not allowing Windows background processing during the thread). It eventually gets stuck and becomes totally unresponsive.

I do not have any missing thumbnails, and I was attempting to rebuild all of them. I can attempt your test, but MC24 should do nothing at all, since none are missing.

Actually, MC might be busy in the background rebuilding the thumbnails while it's appearing unresponsive. What happens if you leave it like that (and allow it to do its thing) after a few hours or a day or two? Just don't exit/close MC when Windows reports it's unresponsive, as it's likely working in the background.

Furthermore, how many files (and what types are they) are you rebuilding the thumbnails for?

Why not start logging MC limited to 5MB under Help. Then cause the hangup to see what might be initiating the hang. You might have a dodgy file on your NAS, for example, which would explain the freeze. My MC is still building thumbnails from the NAS in the background and remains perfectly functional.

The second screenshot about MC24 being unresponsive shows and it stops all activity. This is not normal by any means. My only options are to wait or close the app. If I click wait, it freezes with no activity at all from my NAS. The unresponsive window pops back up again.

I actually do not have that many files: over 15,000. I have a combination of: APE, MP3, FLAC and OGG.

I turned on logging and reproduced the issue. It actually hangs right away, which is something new in this version I had never experienced in the past. It gets to about file #50 or 60 then freezes. This is consistent since rebuilding thumbnails with my post. As soon as it dies, I will post the log (as soon as I find where it is).

The log stops at this file Filename: \\QNAPNAS\Media\Digital Audio\Hubrid\2017, The Darksynth\08-Loneliness.flac. Would it be possible to move this folder to a location on the QNAP which is not used by MC then retry the thumbnail build with logging on?

I moved the entire Hubrid directory and everything below to a backup path. I have been rebuilding thumbnails for some time now. It is taking longer, and is probably slower now due to logging. I will post a follow-up as soon as it stops.

I think that the file I identified is probably the cause. You can wait until thumbnail building is complete then replace the hubrid directory minus that one file and try building the thumbnails for that. Then add the file identified and try doing just that one - it should cause a hang! Hope everything works for you.

Windows just reported it unresponsive again. This time it took much longer, so it seems the Hubrid directory is related to the issue. I cannot attach the whole log, so I am only sending the end of it. It's too large even ZIP'd.

This happens for more than just one though, so it's a bug that needs fixing in MC24.

Do these two files play ok in MC and do they have cover art showing?

Then you may need the help of one of the high flyers on this forum. As I said earlier my NAS is having its thumbnails built with no problem - so it is likely that something about your set up is causing the problem.

It is occurring on your particular set-up, I have tried a complete thumbnail rebuild on my system from a NAS drive and it is working correctly.
Windows 10 fully updated, MC 24.0.41. on a Gigabyte Brix with limited CPU power and 8GB memory. Netgear ReadyNAS 102. I did it on this system because if anything was going to trip it up it would happen on this system. Do you have these files stored anywhere else, or could you put some of them on a different drive and then see if thumbnails build correctly?

You were heading in a good direction with suspecting specific folders and files. So, what if I was to move these two folders to my local C: drive followed by rebuilding thumbnails to see the same problem? Is it still an issue with my particular system, or can MC24 not handle the artwork of these two particular folders? What if you do not have these folders on your system?

You might try a smartlist media type is audio - playable is not 1 . This might show up any problem files in your library.

All I can suggest is to do a build thumbnails on batches of files to see if it fails with particular files. I agree that when a process fails it should exit gracefully and not cause the system to hang. This kind of behaviour suggests that there is an image file with a damaged header section, as far as I know. You could remove the newly added cover art, replace it with the old cover art, remove embedded cover art from the files in those albums - then check if rebuilding thumbnails works.
