32-bit version does not install in the (x86) folder?
« on: July 21, 2018, 04:30:06 am »

Just noticed that the 32-bit version (24.0.41) installed by default in the Program Files folder, instead of Program Files (x86). Is this intentional? It was a new installation, not upgrade/update.

The (x86) folder helps to separate between versions and avoid some confusion.

The 32-bit version does install into Program Files (x86), unless you changed it at some point.

No, I didn't change anything. Downloaded the installer about an hour ago, selected Normal setup (not express) and the program went into Program Files.

I tried again now, and I am noticing there is no way to select the installation path. Don't know if this is related to MC being already installed. Like I said, I did not change anything and it was a clean/fresh installation.

The 64-bit version will install into Program Files, while the 32-bit version (installing on a 64-bit Windows OS) will install into Program Files (x86).

In theory yes (and it always did in the past), but have you tried clean-installing with the latest 32-bit installer on W10 x64?

Yes, we've tried. And I've also written it. It'll only install somewhere else if a previous version was installed there in the past.

Just tried this with the newest beta build and my lovely 64 bit MC installation in  program files is now a 32 bit version - I think audioriver might have a point here. The installation of required components went flawlessly and I could restart playback where I left it before the installation, but the X86 jriver folder is empty, the files for jriver only appear in the jriver programfiles folder. Help about indicates that I now have the 32bit version.

I currently have both installed at the same time, one in Program Files (x86), and one in Program Files.

That may well be the case  Hendrik, I am just reporting what happened when I tried to install a 32 bit version of MC when the 64bit version of the program was already installed with no prior installation of the 32 bit version. Using the express instal procedure.

Does the same thing if you select custom then normal in the next screen. You are not offered a chance to choose a preferred location, the installer jumps straight to the install screen and begins it's work.

Complete uninstall of MC 24 64bit and 32 bit from computer selecting remove register entries. Install 32 bit, install 64 bit x86 folder empty , program files jriver contains the 64 bit files only. Progams and features shows that JRiver MC 32 bit is installed. If you then uninstall the jriver 32 bit version you don't have any MC on youir system. Come on there has to be a problem here!

So now I have MC 24 64 bit running lovely, but windows programs and features tells me I have MC 24 32 bit installed even though there are no files in the relevant folder and I dare not unistall it because my 64 bit version will vanish......no problem.

You can verify which version you are using this way:

1. Open the Task Manager and go to the Details tab.
2. Right-click on a top column (Name, PID, Status etc.) and select "Select columns".
3. Near the bottom of the list, enable "Platform".

This will tell you if an open process is 32 or 64-bit, just open MC and locate the Media Center exe.

Perhaps only some of the downloaded installers are affected? I wish the JRiver team would investigate this more. I fully uninstalled MC (selecting to clear everything) and re-downloaded the 32-bit MediaCenter240041.exe. I selected:

Setup Type: Custom / Normal install to a computer

This time, I saw the option to set the installation path (could have missed it the fist time, not sure) but again, the installer defaults to:

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 24\

I'll also add that the first time I noticed this, it was on a clean Windows installation. Media Center had never been installed there so I could have never manually chosen to install the 32-bit version in the Program Files folder.

Apparently this was broken for fresh installs just two weeks ago (fresh in .41). Will be fixed in a future build.
