REQ: File type check based on file not extenension

MC won't let you play a .DAT file (VCD MPEG) because it's filename extension is not .mpg....  if you rename it it works fine.  Is there anyway to open up the file types a bit more?  I don't really know how it does it's valid file type checking but I'm led to believe the filename has something to do with it based upon this.  I'm not expecting a default association of .DAT and MC, but I'd like to be able to manually set it up and have the ability to drag and drop a .DAT into MC and have it attempt to play it.
