Aborted MP3 Decode, Hard Drive Now Full
« on: January 05, 2003, 01:11:17 pm »

While decoding a large MP3, I ran out of disk space. After I quit MJ to delete the MP3, my entire hard drive was still full. Is there a temp file where the partial decode is sitting ? :o

In Options, File Naming & Location, there a place to specify a temporary file location.  Check there, plus the windows temp directory.

Interesting. I have the default c:\music\temp as the directory to use. I do not though, have a c:\music directory. I tried editing a much smaller MP3 (after clearing some other program files out) and the file did get decoded into a wav. I'm still not able to find where that wav file (or temp wav file) is stored or its extension (if not wav). I did check in the recommended locations and found no files that appeared to be related to MJ.

Any other ideas ?

Os Win2K

the wave file is deleted from the Temp Dir Just After It Is Converted.

Ok, so now I know I'm not going nuts  :-*

That explains now. How about the previous post when the operation aborted ? Before the decoding I had a gig free (the mp3 was rather large). After the decoding aborted due to a lack of space, I pressed okay and my hard drive was still filled up and I'm not sure where to look for that file (or at least I can't find where the space went to)

MJ uses a temp directory that you can set.  The file should be there.  It's usually c:\music\temp, but it could be anything.

Agreed, and that's what the settings in MJ are set for, however I don't have a c:\music or c:\music\temp directory.

So, that being the case where are the files then stored ? Or, are the directories dynamically created/deleted ?

Thanks in advance.

You can find out by exploring MJ's settings/options.

The settings in MJ are c:\music\temp, but again I don't have those directories created on my HD. Will MJ create/delete them on the fly ?

I can create those directories/subdirectories for the next time so I'll know where the files will be.

I'm still trying to see where the old file might be now.

(I know it's a pain dealing with newbies, but I do appreciate it)"

MJ \ MC does create the dir, it does not delete it. it should be there.

Maybe something is wrong.

Maybe Create A Folder, Then Go Into MJ And Browse To The Temp Folder You Just Created To Make Sure.

Thanks for saying that, but new people are often a breath of fresh air.  If you'll be patient, there are plenty of people here who can help.

Yep, those are the paths set in the program, but I had to manually create the directory and subdirectory.

Is MC 9 worth the upgrade ? I was very impressed with MJ 8. It gives RealOne a great run for the money. I don't really need all the "extras" RO "provides".

It Really Depends On Your Point Of View I Guess.

More Bugs Need To Be Worked Out Right Now.

But I Use Options in MC9 That Are Not In MJ8 So I Would Say Yes.

How about using the Windows Search function....

Go to the Advanced tab and specify to look for files bigger than a certain size.

Also, Jvk, remember that an MP3 decoded to WAV could be almost 10 times bigger than the original MP3.

Found it !!

For future reference MJ 8's Media Editor decodes the file in the systems temp directory.

For example, in Win 2K, My Computer>>Properties>>Advanced>>Environment Variables lists what folders are used for temp space.

This is not searched by the normal search function in Windows because this is normally a hidden file.

I found the files by accident while checking on something else. The 2+ gig file was sitting there and actually marked with the file name(decompressed).wav

So to summarize, if a decode aborts abnormally, the file is not automatically removed and it can be found (at least for Win 2K) in the temp directory indicated by the environment variable setting.

I wonder if that is a bug.

I am also having trouble with Decoding, and hard drive full. Also decoding large Mp3 (2 Albums).
Trying to use Media Editor to split file. C drive is to full, so set D:\music for decoding. MJ keeps putting decoded file in C:\Window\Temp.  HARD DRIVE FULL, end of story!!
Does anyone know if this a BUG ? ? ?
