Macbook Pro/JRiver has static playing DSD files
« on: August 16, 2018, 08:13:20 pm »

All,

I have a MacBook Pro (High Sierra 10.13.6). I am running the latest JRiver build though a McIntosh C2600 preamp (USB inout) playing DSD 128 files. Previously, it worked like a charm and sounded amazing.

But after a few weeks of not using my Mac, I tried to play the same files and they all have immense static overlaying the tracks that play faintly underneath.

On both occasions, I have my McIntosh selected as the output in my system preferences in my MacBook Pro, have selected under Settings in JRiver: Bitstreaming: Yes (DSD) and finally, have selected under Audio Device in the JRiver settings: McIntosh-HD USB Audio (CoreAudio).

Still the problem persists and I am stumped.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing this has the same underlying issue as DSD bitstreaming via ASIO on Windows:
DSD requires that the signal is played at 100% volume or else it breaks the bitstream. Check that the device's volume is set to 100% (0 dB) before playback, in the 'Audio MIDI Setup' app.

In addition, some DACs require using the highest bit-depth/sample rate available for the DAC under the Audio MIDI Setup app.
