Monkey's Audio 3.98 decoding / tagging has been in MC 9.0 for quite a while.  However, we'll update it to the latest soon and include the new encoder.

Thanks.

BIG Problem - Dragging a track from the main window into any of the view schemes causes :-

MC freezes for a minute or so
then tries unsuccessfully to download an unnamed package
then repeats this 12 or so times
then unsuccesfully tries to connect to a number of web pages
then freezes with a lot of HD activity
then locks up often causing a reboot from the nasty blue screen

This problem has been there for 5 or 6 releases

I agree, I keep going back to ver 9.0.143 bacause of stability.   My videos (mpg) play well with no crashes like the current releases 178 and from what I've been reading now 179.

Seems 'Check for Updates...' does not work. Using 9.0.178 it reports no updates available!

We don't update the update version until the file is moved to the downloads page.  A newer version may always be here, but it may be less stable.

Having major trouble downloading music to my Rio 500. I am using latest version of MC9, and Windows XP. Basically, at beginning of "Transfering Files to Device," MC9 freezes, I get an error report from XP, and then the entire MC9 shuts down.

packyb,

Can you transfer files to your Rio using the software that came with the Rio? This might be a good test to rule out any hardware issues. If you can, then your problem is proabably a driver problem. Check out the following thread...

JimH -

So it would appear that I'm not alone in the Drag & Drop problem.  I'm running .175 the current release version and it has the D&D blight.

I reported this in another thread to which you replied:
Quote
I have no idea what is happening.  Sorry.

Try clearing your temp files.  In IE, go to Tools/Internet Options/Temp Internet files and delete.

I reported back:
Quote
Cleaned Temp, Temp Internet and any cookies I couldn't identify.  The problem persists.

Help!!!
To which there was no response.

It would be nice if JRiver had a buglist on the Forum where we could "vote" for our problems.  Up until reading these posts I thot I had some weird system problem going on.  Don't know if its relevant or not but I too am running Win98 SE.

Off to start a new topic about a bug in the current "stable" release.

Gvag....

I clean the IE temp folders almost incessantly and it makes not an iota of difference to the problem. I've also uninstalled/reinstalled a few times which also does'nt help.

The 'drag/drop' problem and the 'playing now' problem almost always causes a reboot which makes MC almost unusable to me in it's present form. Therefore, I don't use it much which is really frustrating but, at least, less frustrating than have the darn thing bomb out all the time.

When I do use it, I tend to keep away from all but the simplest of features - it's now become a habit as I'm so fed up with the instability.

I think your comment re Win98 is appropriate - there's been probs in the past which were unique to this platform.

I'm also suffering from the problem of MC closing down if it's just left live. This prob seems to have been reported so many time but still it's not been resolved and the absence of anyone reporting it any more is not, I suspect, because it's been resolved, but, because people are just fed up with restating it.

I know JR are anxious to press ahead with more features but I really wish they'd take a week out to revisit all these ghosts which, at least for me, have taken away the pleasure of using the app in the first place.

Try stripping down your PC, removing all un-necessary software and hardware.  Try updating all drivers and updating Windows itself.  Please start a new thread on Win98 stability.  You'll get some good suggestions.

We will also try to duplicate the problem on Win98.

Sorry Jim, but I think you've missed the point here totally.

MC is the only app that I'm having problems with and I would'nt dream of having to go through your suggestion of stripping, updating etc for just one app.

I would'nt even complain about the instability of MC as it is my choice as to whether I take beta updates or not. My concern is that some of the stability has gone backwards, and what I mean by that, is that, for instance, the 'playing now' problem was rife, at least for me, a coupla months back. I did'nt 'complain' about it at the time and waited for a fix which eventually happened.
But now it's back and it's such a basic requirement within MC that it's almost impossible to run MC without it. I can't see that it could be caused by anything else than an internal MC error.

Also, the 'drag and drop' issue is such a basic requirement that, was working, and now is'nt. As I don't have this problem in any other app, I would consider this to be a problem within your app rather than anything else on my pc.

I use my pc mainly for music (MC only - no other 'jukebox' software), emails, banking and little else. There's very little redundant software and certainly no redundant hardware. The machine is housekept on a weekly basis so, as you can see, I have no necessity to 'strip' it down - if it ain't broken, don't mend it.

I hope you see these comments as, at least, constructive. I've been using MJ/MC for a long time (and intend using it for a lot longer!) and getting into it after working all night, is one of my highlights. It's just, at the mo, coming home from work and selecting a coupla tracks only to see the whole lot collapse is fairly disappointing.

That said, it's a nice sunny day here in England and, life ain't too bad is it !!!

Have a nice day Jim

BUGS:

1.  Skinned scroll bar.  When the scroll bar is clicked at the extreme top or left edge, the screen immediately moves to the top/left instead of simply moving one page.  This is non-standard Windows behavior and does not occur without any skinning.

2.  Right-Click on Item in Tree.  When an item (like an artist or album) is right clicked in the tree, there is a choice called "File Properties".  When selected it should bring up the File Properties window for every track for the item.  Sometimes is does, and other times is brings up the window which says "no files selected".  I have yet to figure out the pattern for when it works and when it does not work.  It worked great in v8.

3.  Playing Now.  When I play music using RemoteServer, the "Playing Now" screen does not update on the main computer screen where MC is running.  And if I click "Playing Now" on the main system it doesn't update either.  I must click on something else in the tree first and then click on "Playing Now" for it to update.

4.  CD Burn Window.  Can't DEL a track from the burn list.  I get a requestor asking if I really want to remove the track, I click YES, but the track remains.  Also, moving the order of the tracks around makes a mess of the list, sometimes the tracks are moved, other time, duplicates appear.  This bug has been verified by others in other threads.

CHANGE-REQUESTS:

1.   Toolbar Text.  I request a return to the v8 set of choices where I can have Selective Text on Right and No Text Labels and TEXT and ICONS (or whatever it was called).

2.   Auto Expanding Tree on program startup to a selected view or playlist, a default.  (like MediaLibrary->Artist->Album/Artist)

3.   Artist/Album/Track sorting to eliminate a user list of anchored strings for sorting purposes.  For example, to not consider the "The " in "The Rolling Stones" if "The " was in the user list of anchored strings to ignore.

4.   mjextman.exe : I'd like the ability to list multiple commands to execute for mjextman.exe to avoid multiple calls to accomplish the same commands.

5.   SleepTimer Plugin time display is hard to read.  I request that the darkened elements of the characters be totally gone, not just darkened, for easy readability.  Or simply use a non-segmented font, an easy to read font.

QUESTIONS:

1.   Does MC support burning 99 minute CDR's if the burner supports it?

BUG: I have a visualisation with an Image module with OnEquation set to
on=if(t<24,1,0);t=(t+1)%800
This is similar to "Every 10th frame" but it's on for about a second every 30 seconds. The problem I have is that often the image doesn't change when the track changes. I'll sometimes see the cover for the track I was listening to several tracks ago. I've tried tweaking the settings but is sometimes happens on the preset "Every 10th frame" too.

MC locks hard immediately when attempting to burn an Audio CD, as soon as the CD Burning Progress dialog appears.

This problem has been there for a while, but I kept thinking someone else would get it fixed.  But it's still here:

When using the Convert Format tool, it no does not allow you to convert formats to a different (usually lower) bit rate.  For example, I often convert my 256 bit rate MP3's to 128 bit rate MP3's to use on my portable player.  In days long past, I could use this program to do it.  Now it says that it is already converted and just ignores the file.

Also, when using Convert Format, in the past (I don't remember what version), when using the "Move to location" option, it would move all files, even if they did not need to be converted.  Now it skips them entirely.  I loved being able to select an entire set of songs (some WMA, some 256 MP3, some 128 MP3) and tell it to convert them all to 128 bit rate MP3 and move them to another directory (my portable player).  These days, I end up with only the WMA-coverted-MP3 songs on my portable player.  It skips converting all the MP3s and does not move a copy of them either.

It should act the way it used to and so in my example that would be:  it converts the WMA files to 128 bit MP3 files and moves them; it converts the 256 bit rate MP3s to 128 MP3s and move them; it does not convert the 128 bit rate MP3s but moves a copy of them.

Hope that makes sense.  And I hope it can be fixed.

I have a number of tracks "In Queue" on my cd burner, but when I right-click to remove them the "delete" option is greyed out. Adding them isn't a problem, but consequently I have too many tracks in my queue and can't seem to do anything about it.

Kent,

Are you doing your conversions while transfering the files to your Portable, or from within MC. If from within MC, do you have the checkbox in Converter Settings enabled for "Skip Duplicates"?

Bug report:

1.) Open Media Center.
2.) go to Library manager.
3.) Attempt to load a library.
4.) If the load fails and you then choose to Exit Media Center hard crashes.

MC is leaking handles like a sieve while ripping.

MC 9.0.179, WinXP SP1, Ripping to WMA VBR.

Bring up the Task Manager during ripping. Switch to the Processes tab. Display the Handles column if it isn't already displayed (View->Select Columns, Handle Count). Watch the handle count go up by > 10-20 on each refresh. Leaks thousands per CD ripped.

On Win2k/WinXP, handle leaks lead to performance problem. On Win9x/Me, a handle leak this severe can easily bring down the system.

Not sure if this is an MC problem or a WMA9 problem, but it's pretty bad.

Full sysinfo below.

Is there a way for MC to delete folders from directory when removing unwanted albums? Files get deleted but leaves empty folders all over the place. Doesn't seem to make any difference as to which type of delete I use.

Hi Huys,

I'm pleased to notice that you update Trackinfo in order to support all fields include composer. That's great.
One more step is to do the same change to support composer and other field in Visualization.
I think it requires the same kink of bug fix.
BTW, I still have the same problem with visualization studio. I cannot edit the text field. Each time I do a modification, it is never saved, I have to edit directly the xml file. Any idea wher it comes from ?
Here are my system info
Media Center Registered 9.0.179 -- C:\Program Files\Media Center\

MP3 Downconversion fails
« Reply #25 on: June 03, 2003, 02:53:29 pm »

I just ran into a file I couldn't do a bit conversion on.
This isn't build .179 specific as I've tried a couple of builds.  I'll be happy to send the offending file(s) if necessary.  I am downconverting to 160kbit from the 256 rate.  I have done this successfully to thousands of files.  The file(s) play fine in MC. I am using the standard MC MP3Encoder v 2.0.57.  The file "decodes" then hangs on the encode.  I have to shut it down via task manager.

I know, I know..it's The Four Seasons so who cares....
Here's the file information anyway:
MPEG-1 Layer 3
256 Kbit CBR
44.1 Khz Stereo

Copyrighted: No
Original: Yes
Protected by CRC: No

ID3v1 Tag: (128 bytes)
Name: Tell It To The Rain
Artist: Frankie Valli & The Four Sea..
Album: In Season - The Frankie Vall..
  Year: 2001
  Comment: Track 4
  Track #: 4
  Genre: Rock (17)

ID3v2 Tag: (1284 bytes)
TIT2 (Title/songname/content..): Tell It To The Rain
TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Solo..): Valli, Frankie & The Four Seasons
TALB (Album/Movie/Show title): In Season - The Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons Anthology (Disc 2 of 2)
 TYER (Year): 2001
 TRCK (Track number/Position ..): 4
 TCON (Content type): Rock
TENC (Encoded by): Exact Audio Copy   (Secure mode)
 COMM (Comments): Track 4

Steve,
Yes, it appears that "skip duplicates" is checked by default.  What does this option do?

Steve,
I unchecked the "skip duplicates" box and it no longer gives me a "failed to convert" error when I try to convert one MP3 to another MP3 at a different bit rate.  That's good.
However, what the heck does "skip duplicates" mean int his context?
Also, when I'm converting an MP3 to another MP3 with the SAME bit rate (which is not done separately, but merely as a batch conversion with many other songs), it still decodes the file and re-encodes it.  I thought in the past it was smart enough to realize that it doesn't need to do that if nothing has changed.
Oh well.
Thanks.

MC always reenables shell integration on upgrade. Please retain the user's setting. I have to keep going into options and clearing this setting each time I update.

Thanks

MC doesn't escape '&'s in titles when building context menus. Look at the right-click menu in min-me mode, Quick Play->Media Library. Note that it says 'CD   DVD', not 'CD & DVD'. Simon & Garfunkel shows up as 'Simon   Garfunkel'. Since MC isn't escaping the '&', Windows is interpreting it as an accelerator.

Thanks
