Library in double
« on: August 24, 2018, 02:14:01 pm »

I just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro and moved my Media Center 24 library to an external hard drive. Now, I have every song/album in double. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Plus, I can't restore the license. I get a "There was a problem restoring the license. Error details: There was a problem communicating with the license server." error.

Please advise.

It's because of this: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,117123.msg810255.html

Gotta wait for the servers to come back up.

It sounds like you externally copied your music files to an external drive and then told MC to use that as an Auto Import location.

The general way to move music files en-masse with MC is this (might be missing some detail here and there):

1.  Make a library backup with File > Library > backup library
2.  Turn off auto import
3.  Shut down MC.
4.  Move your files externally with whatever tool you like.  This will probably take a long time.
5.  Fire MC back up and see that all of your files are now "broken" because MC thinks they are on the OLD drive, but they are not.  You moved them.
6.  Use the Rename, Move, and Copy files tool.  Use the "update database location" action.  This will tell MC, for each file, "hey, I moved that file over here".  You probably want to uncheck "Directories" and "Filename", and instead check "Find & Replace".  In the Find & Replace parameters, you want to substitute the old location with the new location.  This will probably be something like /Volumes/Macintosh Hard Drive/ and /Volumes/Big_External_Drive/ .

For this last step, go slow.  Do one song and see if it works.  If not, try again.  Once you get a song to work, do an album.  Once that works, do a more albums.  Eventually select everything and do those too.

If you screw it up too badly you can just restore from the backup you made in step #1.

This probably seems really involved.  It's detailed, but it's really not bad.  I've done it dozens of times and had very very few problems.  It's just a matter of understanding the process and experimenting a little bit.

Use the Preview area in the Rename Move and Copy files Tool!  It's your friend.  It will show you what it's going to do before it does it.

Good luck.

Brian.

I have a similar problem to JazzMD.  Here's what I did:

My original media collection is on my Mac Mini, in these folders:
/Users/Jack/Music/[Artist]/[Album]/Name
/Volumes/Movies/Movies/[Name]/Name
/Volumes/Movies/Shows/[Series]/

I copied my MEDIA FILES to an external hard drive, in these folders:
/Volumes/5TBLibrary/Movies/[Name]/Name
/Volumes/5TBLibrary/Music/[Artist]/[Album]/[Artist] - [Name]
/Volumes/5TBLibrary/Shows/[Series]/S[Season]E[Episode] - [Name]

When I started copying files to /Volumes/5TBLibrary, I created a LIBRARY (named 5TB Library) so I could see how MC was handling all the copied files.  I remember setting up Auto Import, but I don't remember how I configured it.  I'm not sure that matters for this question because after a couple of days MC wouldn't open 5TB Library at all.

So I <cleared> 5TB Library.  I then made a clone of Main Library and saved it in:
/Users/Jack/MC Library/Application Support/JRiver/Media Center 24/Library
(Is that a mistake?  I realize now I'm using MC 21, I never did upgrade.)

I then renamed "Main Library (clone)" to "New Library" and configured Auto Import to:
Look in /Volumes/5TBLibrary/Movies/ and all child folders
Look in /Volumes/5TBLibrary/Music/ and all child folders
Look in /Volumes/5TBLibrary/Shows/ and all child folders
Get cover art (I should have left this off)
Get movie & TV info (I should have left this off, my video tags were just how I wanted them)
Ignore titles previously removed from library
Update for external changes (I think I should have left this off)
Fix broken links
Ignore special files (in all three folders)

It looks like everything got imported twice, once from:
/Users/Jack/... or /Volumes/Movies/...
and once from:
/Volumes/5TBLibrary/...

Why did MC import files from both MEDIA COLLECTIONS?  Is it the "fix broken links" flag?  What's the best way to fix this?  Is there an automated way to delete all files from "New Library" that came from either /Users/Jack/... or /Volumes/Movies/...?

If not, do I <clear> "New Library" and build a different library?  How should I set it up so it only looks in the external drive 5TBLibrary?

Duh, what wasn't clear last night is clear during the new day.  When I used <clone> I made a clone of Main Library.  MC then added the files from the folders I specified.

Last night I thought <clone> would copy the LIBRARY structure and then import according to the rules entered for the new LIBRARY.
