I'm talking cheap as in up to around $100, so consumer grade. I'm using Audigy PCI with kX drivers on my systems and have been for 15 years or so, but now I need four more zones, and I only have two free PCIe slots on the motherboard of the media server, no more PCI slots.

Have you considered getting multiple, cheap USB sound cards or is that of no interest?

Unfortunately that's a no go, since USB cards have a bad tendency to come up with different ID's which confuses the zones. But I have ordered a few SoundBlaster Audigy RX, they are supposedly supported by kX drivers, so with a bit of luck I'm good.
