5 seconds...then CRASH!
« on: June 01, 2003, 08:29:27 am »

Stunning software.   ;D

The demo works perfectly upon installation.

As soon as I shut it down and then start it up again later in the day, or even restart my computer, Media Center 9 crashes after about 5 - 7 seconds.  No warning.  No "send error report" stuff.  Just GONE!

What the... ?

I know it's only the demo but I plan on purchasing it.  That is, if it stops crashing.

I'm using Windows XP on a 800MHz Dell computer.  If you need more info, please let me know.

I'm a newbie here on the boards, so please be gentle if I'm missing something obvious.

Thanks.

Can you post your system info here?  Copy it from MC Help.

It's not normal.  Could be a lot of things.

Something is using a lot of memory.  Try shutting down any programs or services that you can, just to see if it makes a difference.

Turn off skins.  Skin Manager is under Tools.

Turn off "check for updates" to stop any network activity.

Other possibilities:

Bad memory, bug in video driver, and so on.

Does it die at exactly the same point each time?  What is it doing at the time?

A full uninstall/reinstall would be worth trying.  Remove registry entries.

Well, all seems right with the world now.  ;)

Thanks for all your help.  I disabled the skins component and everything works fine.

I'll certainly be purchasing this great software, no question about it.

By the way, when it DID crash, it did so after about 15 seconds from the program being opened.  No mouse clicks or other activity by me...it just disappeared.  Interesting.

Thanks again.

you might want to look and see if your video board has a newer driver.

Video Boards Are sometimes a bit freaky, I prefer to buy the best but with time they too fall by the wayside.

Glad to hear it worked out.  KingSparta gives good advice on updating the video driver.  Swapping the video card would also work.
