Play mounted DVD .ISO file
« on: October 02, 2018, 02:08:11 pm »

When a DVD .ISO file is mounted in Windows I see it in "Drives and Devices".
When a DVD .ISO file is mounted in Linux, I do not see it in "Drives and Devices".
How can I play a DVD .ISO file in MC24 for Linux?

Instead of mounting the ISO, try opening the ISO file itself in MC. You may have to change the ISO file type playback method (MC's Options > File Types), not sure.

Thank you for analyzing my problem.

I don't find any "File Type" area in the options for Linux version 24.0.52 (64 bit) like I do for Windows version 24.0.54 (64 bit).

Is that still coming in the Linux version?

Not sure about the File Types section, since file associations won't work under MC for Linux (has to be done through the desktop environment) but the Playback Method part might be doable. However Bob would know for sure.

But does opening the ISO file work? Never tried a DVD ISO in MC for Linux.

There is no file types section in the options menu in linux, most unfortunately.

Personally, I would just extract the image file with something like 7zip and import that folder to the library.

Now I am trying to play a physical DVD from the internal optical drive.

Even though the disc is in the drive and mounted, nothing is shown under Drives and Devices.

Is there DVD support in Linux?

I don't think there's any CD/DVD/BD disk support under Linux yet.

There is also the problem of disc decryption. I believe AnyDVD does not work in Linux. I researched this a while back and remember reading that there is a way to play encrypted DVDs and Blu-rays but the process to do it was rather long-winded & difficult. Might as well, decrypt & rip your disc in a Windows machine.

MakeMKV works under Linux. You can use it to rip DVD/BD discs to MKV and play those through MC.

Funny. I thought MakeMKV worked only in Windows -- not that I tried it in linux.  Good to know :)

Can we learn whether DVD support is coming to Media Center 24, or if it is planned a subsequent release?

DVD support on Windows entirely relies on a OS-provided component, as such we would have to entirely rebuild it from scratch, so at this time there are no short-term plans for this. Sorry.
