Is the 64 bit MC leveled up with 32 bit version?
« on: November 19, 2018, 07:33:39 am »

I've been putting off upgrading to the 64 bit version of MC because it seemed like it was not quite up to the level of the 32 bit version for a while. Has that situation changed? Would I have to sacrifice anything in features or stability by moving to the 64 bit version?

Good question, I'm curious about that too. But the only thing I can think of is DRM-protected QuickTime/iTunes files won't work in the 64-bit version of MC even if you have QuickTime installed, mainly because QuickTime on Windows is no longer developed (nor do I think Apple ever released a 64-bit version of QuickTime). I really don't think that's too much of a loss, since there's nothing JRiver can do about that one and if you're using MC to play DRM-protected files through QuickTime, I'd highly recommend obtaining DRM-free versions of said files if possible.

I'm sure there's nuances with 32-bit VST plugins not having a 64-bit counterpart, which isn't a MC issue. And possibly ASIO drivers from some manufacturers only coming in 32-bit and not 64-bit which, again, isn't a MC issue. Perhaps scanners too if you use MC to scan stuff, which *may* not work in the 64-bit version, probably depending on drivers so one would have to try it. I guess there's also the possibility some handhelds may not work with the 64-bit version of MC which do work with the 32-bit version but they should mostly work. Somethings to keep in mind, I guess.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

The ASIO driver in 32 bit or 64 bit wouldn't matter which version you use.  It's an OS thing.  IE: I can use a 32 bit app on a 64 bit OS, which requires a 64 bit driver.  There are also 32 to 64 bit bridges for VST plugins if needed.  They don't always work in every application though.

32-bit and 64-bit MC are practically identical these days. The big unknown are external interactions - ie. VST plugins, ASIO drivers, and possibly other things that would have to be available in 64-bit for MC to use.
The only exception I know of is that we only support DRM-protected WMA files on 32-bit, because the Windows Media SDK we used for that was discontinued and has no 64-bit variant. But who really still has such files? :)

This would be true for "normal" drivers, but not for ASIO. ASIO is basically not a "driver" in the strictest sense, it doesn't directly interact with Windows. Instead an ASIO driver is a library that an application opens directly - and as such the driver needs to have both a 32-bit and 64-bit library that the applications can access respectively.

The single, biggest problem with MC x64, as I'm sure Josh Huggins will agree, is that the Playing Now plugin won't work with it.

Nudge, Nudge :D ;)

Please, can you tell me where can I download this plugin?
