Random dump out of MC
« on: November 01, 2018, 12:33:14 pm »

Just recently and with no obvious changes in system, I am getting randomly dumped out of MC into Desktop.  Reload MC and all's well until another dump.  Could take days or minutes.  See attached dump data for two events today on the same track but I do not think it is the track because it happens with others.

The crash appears to be in the FLAC input plugin, so while the specific track might not matter, the file type does.
I'll take a closer look.

Thanks.  That particular FLAC is 24/352.8

Here's another crash log after another 24/352.8 file.  Will try other formats.

Looks like its related to memory playback. Do your tracks happen to be particularly long, maybe over 16 minutes?
In any case, I did some work to avoid issues with tracks that end up rather big in memory.

Ah.  They are not particularly long but they are very large because they are multichannel high bitrate files.  The early 2 crashes were with 24/352.8 files and this one is with DSD256 file.

What I suspect is that, somehow, Memeory Playback was set to "Load Decoded File into Memory."  I am trying to repeat these tests with memory playback off and go from there.

Ah multi-channel, that explains it. It crossed a certain memory requirement with memory playback, and in stereo that would be around 16 minutes at those rates (unless my math failed), but with multi-channel thats of course going to be less.
Basically, when you cross 2GB for an individual decoded track, it was causing issues.

Hopefully the changes I made will prevent those crashes in the future.

Indeed.  I have 32G of RAM, 31G available, but I have not been able to make use of memory playback with many of my files, so I usually leave it off.
