Correct channel output to AVR
« on: November 21, 2018, 03:33:46 pm »

Hi

We are just about to get our first AVR, only used a stereo amp until now.

I'd like to better understand how the correct channel output for the media type is selected.

At which point in the chain is it decided whether it's 2.1, 5.1 etc?

If using 2 subs does the AVR control that?

Do I need to configure MC in any way?

Thanks
Z

1.  If you are planning on multichannel output, you will be using HDMI output from the JRiver host since, afaik, no AVR will accept high-resolution, multichannel input any other way.
2.  Channel layout must be configured in JRiver since, afaik, no AVR can redistribute channel content.
3.  Depending on your hardware/software purchases, you should set the output channel configuration at 5.1 or 7.1.
3.  It is probably advantageous to handle all bass management and DSP in the AVR.
4.  Management of multiple subs is a complex issue but the easiest way is to let the AVR do it, especially if it has 2 subwoofer outputs.  More than 2?  Lots of considerations.

When you have the AVR of your choice, get back and tell us how it is going.
