Which anti-virus software works best with MC
« on: December 10, 2018, 07:18:13 am »

Unfortunately MC hangs very often and this is probably caused by the combination with Bitdefender.

I am aware of https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,86096.0.html and I am already in this list with an older Bitdefender problem.
Making exceptions for MC in Bitdefender does not work. But Bitdefender does its work properly, never had any virus troubles whatsoever.

What I look for is an anti-virus protection program with which MC functions properly. Any suggestions?

If you're on Windows 10, then using Windows Defender is really your best choice. Microsoft has slowly but surely built it to be one of the best anti-virus options one could use.

Gotta agree with Hendrik. Windows 10's Windows Defender over the last year to a year and a half has made leaps and bounds from where it used to be. They've been integrating new security features which puts it on par with paid anti-virus applications. Yes, Windows Defender *can* mess with Media Center, but it's very easy to tame so Defender doesn't mess with it if it does indeed mess with it. There are some users who have never needed to tame Defender since they don't encounter any issues with it and Media Center.

It's kinda sad to see these third-party anti-virus applications becoming more complicated and convoluted while doing things they really shouldn't be doing (e.g. Bitdefender DLL injecting and causing ntdll.dll crashes in multiple applications). Some users may recommend to use Windows Defender alongside another standalone application, like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but even that has declined in quality and increased in complexity for an on-demand scanner for me to even recommend anymore.

It's funny, I remember not too long ago Windows Defender was treated as a joke (which honestly it kinda was). But I have to give Microsoft kudos for improving it significantly and taking security seriously.

I had Kaspersky but switched to MS defender and I am really happy with it. No Virus up to now on three different x86 PC's. Also you have the benefit how to tweak it optimised for MC was greatly described by "Awesome Donkey".

I would go for Win 10 Defender.

Wauwww, never thought of Windows Defender as a serious option.

One thing I find confusing is the amount of tests out there saying that brand XYZ is the best. Other test shows its AVG, then Norton, then BItdefender and the results of all the test are not the same.

Eset nod32 sounds to me like a serious option. Think I will disable my bitdefender and first configure Windows defender. After that I might try Eset nod32.
I simply find it difficult to go without a paid version of antivirus. Why, because in the past is was BS software.

Thanks for the suggestions ..

Your all fooling yourselves. NONE of them can guarantee. So spend your money on useless software that slug down your machines...I lol at all of you!

Well, that could be said about any software, there are no guarantees nor does any AV protect 100%. Some common sense goes a long way when web surfing.

One thing I find confusing is the amount of tests out there saying that brand XYZ is the best.

I take those tests with a grain of salt.

I simply find it difficult to go without a paid version of antivirus. Why, because in the past is was BS software.

That may of been true a couple years ago, but I don't think so anymore. Windows Defender has become a serious contender now. Plus it's built into the operating system itself.

BTW, disabling Bitdefender to test Windows Defender may not be enough, since the AV "disables" Windows Defender when a third-party AV is installed. But I don't think Windows Defender can't be fully disabled as it's integrated well into the operating system.

I have removed all Bitdefender software and activated Windows Defender. Added the exceptions on my 64 bit version like Awesome Donkey suggested. (I only excluded folders and not all the separate files like he advised) Also added ape, flac and mp3 as exlusions.

Just now MC crashed as it regularly did with Bitdefender. It happened with copying music to my Astell and Kern player SP1000. I use ape on my Astell and Kern and also on my RAID set.

Throughout the many years I have been using MC I've had similar problems along the way. I mostly use MC for putting music on my mobile devices and ripping CD's. Don't use most of the other fancy stuff.
Can't pinpoint exactly where my problems come from. I indeed suspected Bitdefender but for example ripping 2 CD's at the same time continues to be troublesome for many years. That is with and without Bitdefender.
My screen goes out of focus when issuing certain commands to MC. It stays unfocused for a few seconds and then as good as new again.
The 32 bit version does not recognize my Astell And Kern players, the 64 has no problems at all.

I have no clue what to do ..

Try rebooting a couple of times, now that Bitdefender has been removed.

The 32 bit version does not recognize my Astell And Kern players, the 64 has no problems at all.
That may just mean that the driver used to support the player is a 64 bit driver.

Is there anything non-standard about your machine or Windows?  Anything video related, like Windowblinds, for example?

Try removing any attached devices.

It would be worth reading through the "Weird Problems" thread in my signature, just to get some ideas to pursue.

Hi JimH,

Every day I boot 1 or 2 times because I don't leave my PC on the whole day.

The only thing which is different on my PC is that I use an Areca RAID card. Never had any problems with it whatsoever.

For the rest it is standard and good hardware. But like I said, I am not a new user and have encountered different (small) problems that have never been solved.

And I must say that the Astell and Kern can also behave strange. But that should never be a reason to crash MC. And the MC crashes also happen when writing to disk. I will test the coming days ..

Please confirm it's a crash (MC disappears), not a hang (MC is unresponsive).

There was a recent report on Askell and Kerns that it only worked with the 32 bit version of MC because their driver was 32 bit.  At least that's my memory of it.

I use Windows Defender but my data drives are excluded

I have a working drive covered by Defender but once I’m happy it’s a clean file I transfer to my data drives

That was AV doesn’t rescan as I am using a file, I use the same approach for Blu-ray rips with no stuttering
