Left Roon....Looking at JRiver ?
« on: January 06, 2019, 10:33:59 am »

I've had too many issues with Roon and now my subscription is up I'm looking here and have a couple of queries if any one could help.

Will JRiver see a usb connected 4TB HD on a Cambridge 851N ,i want to keep it connected directly ?

Will JRiver control the music stored on the HD from a imac mini as the remote control ?

If the OS sees the drive, MC should.  You could download and install MC and use the trial period to test.

Yes, MC can be used as a remote control for another copy of MC.   There is a wiki topic on Remotes here:

no, JRiver simply relies on the host operating system making a drive available so if that operating system can see that drive then you're ok, if not, it won't.

if you want the drive to stay connected to the 851n then I very much doubt it will see it.

So I would have to connect the HD to the Mac running jriver ?
This is one of the reasons I left Roon.
When the HD is connected directly to the CA 851,the music sounds so much better, rather than it being carried through the network.
I have used the Cambridge app to prove this, which controls the files on the HD.Its just its a very bad app

I think you should be able to connect the drive to the mac using jriver as the media library/controller and the 851n as the renderer

a quick search finds https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=114541.0 which suggests this setup works fine with MC24 and latest firmware on the device

edit: best to test this for yourself to be sure it works as you expect

Is there any way I can get a free trial again to try before I buy.
It doesn't seem to like having me do this cos I had trial previous

Try downloading MC again or use another machine.

MC looks at the files and reads their tags, but it doesn't move them, if that's what you mean.

So all my 4TB of FLACS remain on the external HD,its just the info being imported to jriver.
JRiver isn't letting me download the trial to  either of my Macs as I've triald it before, but then went the ROON option.
I ran Roon on a dedicated NUC and connected to the 4TB HD.
Im going to buy JRiver at the weekend and hope it runs on my setup. This will be.

JRiver on iMac-4TB HD USB to Mac-JRiver remote on mini iPad--End point is Cambridge 851N streamer.
I have a lot of Hi Res 24bit files which i understand jriver will have no problem playing
