3D Visualizations
« on: May 22, 2003, 03:00:18 pm »

Matt built a new kind of visualizations last week and the week before.  You may have seen the posts under the "Is tonight w00t night?"  But I thought it was time for them to get more exposure.

It's still a little fragile.  It won't work on all systems.  The graphics card must be capable of 3d graphics.

It's a new display category, like visualizations, images, track info, and so on, so start audio playing, then try the arrows at the bottom of the screen.  Use the set on the left to find "3d Visualizations".  Then use the set in the middle to cycle through the presets.

If the music has cover art, it will be part of the visualization, as you can see in this screen shot.  What you can't see is that they move.

A couple of them need a little help with scrolling long titles to be able to read. Otherwise very nice. Like preset 6.

Hi.  I'm Tom.  I'll be your server this evening.  Would you like to start with some 3d Visualizations?

Great work. But what about making cover art more obvious - less of them/larger.

Marra,
Did you try all the presets?

Jim,
Yes, I tried all presets. Applies to presets 8,9 and 0 mainly. It all seems too busy. Too many objects moving too quickly. It would be great to start with cover art (still) for x period and then move into motion.
But another thought perhaps my graphics capabilities are not enough (NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64???) - graphics not my strong point! I certainly don't see a spinning cube with graphics on all sides in preset 3 like in your example.

Just noticed that this build is really flying tonight. Tunnel is just cruising.

Speed option is fun to play with.  ;D

This doesn't work for me :(
Some error message about finding compatible stencil buffer format)

Shame!

Nila-
what kind of video card  do you have? I get unwelcome artifacts but no such error message. I thought stencil buffer ops were totally 20th century   ::)

Matt,

I like the cube a lot! But right now it does not move around very gracefully! It moves a little, than stops for about 10 seconds, moves again, stops again.

I remember the first or second 3D version that the cube was moving around the screen much more gracefully than now. Is is possible to get that preset from your earlier version back!

I can confirm Jaguus stuttering cube.

Ive realised from Jims picture that Im not getting cover art in preset 3 (the cube) or 4 (the tunnel). Cover art does appear in 0, 6, 7, 8, 9. Im guessing that the others dont use it, but theres no art in those either.

Know nothing about my video card - its probably onboard given I have a generic whitebox retail PC. FWIW Win XP descibes it as NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400.

Never used visualisations before, but I gotta say that these are fun :)

Matrox G400 Max 32Mb  dual head.

Works great for most the games I play and for working so I'm happy with it.

Might not work too well with the latest and greatest games but I'm not a huge games player so I'm ok.

Best game was AOE 2 - hardly graphics demanding :)

Stupid question....

Is there a way to get rid of the 'JRiver - FPS' text?  Or will that only be removed in the release version?

That will come out in a week or two.  3D visualizations are still in the "experimental" stage.  A lot will change.

I just wanted to add that I'm also having the problem with the visualisations moving and then stopping for a few seconds and then moving again.

I mainly watch the cube visualisation (preset 3) and its a pain why it keeps stopping.  It didn't do this when Matt released the original visualisations a couple of weeks ago.

I'm running a NVidia 4400Ti card - which I thought was a pretty good spec. ?

Has something changed in a recent build of these visualisations where it would make them stop moving every few seconds ??

Thanks,

Mark

The pause will come out in the release version.  All the movement was making Matt seasick.

Like a switch to OpenGL? You could use the Quake 3 engine.

No, You will need 3d glasses

Really i wonder if you could do that, and send out to users 3d kits

1. Glasses
2. Pop Corn
3. MC9 T-Shirt
4. Sticky Coke Pack to put on the floor

Really nice, but it would be more nice to see a Winamp2.x-vis-plugin-support again as we had in version 7 of Media Jukebox.

Imagine, MC in combination with Geiss or G-Force 2, YEAH!

SO :

First ,this is a GREAT new feature to MC.

BUT
The colors are well ...... or 'dead' or for people not seeing well...

The speeds are or to fast or to slow , you may rebuilt a scale.

You can hardly read the words in preset 7.

Concerning sleeves , i think like Marra - this one is far to be ok.
Cannot say what ,just a general feeling.

Beside it ,most of the times ,the sleeve is up-down.

Anyway ,it is only an alpha ,so our future look bright.

PS : from time to time changing preset crash MC

re PS ; the visu art sleeve based in 7 was great ,you may use it as inspiration for the 3D one

The latest release works a lot better for me (I was getting crashes on preset 6 & 7 before).

I am getting some odd behavior.  Objects are sometimes textured with the album art, sometimes not textured.  (Same track, same art. ) I haven't been able to narrow it down futher than that.   Note, this behavior is intermittant. :-(

I'd like to see the 3D text (preset 2) scale or wrap so that more of the text is visable.  Also, it would be nice if preset 2 spent less time displaying the text backwards.

Some way of controlling the speed and path of the "camera" might be useful (vis studio?)!

I wouldn't mind seeing a variation on preset 0 where the camera somewhat slowly circled perhaps 10 of the 3D spectrum rows.  While circling the camera could perhaps vary it's altitude depending on the overall "loudness" (or simply do a roller coaster type up/down path).

Some sort of roman candle partical effects as each element in the spectrum peaks might look cool.

In general I like the 3D visualizations, and anything you can do to make it more obvious that the music is affecting the display would be great.

FWIW, I only get about seven FPS on Preset 0 on my Pentium III @ 1GHz w/ 512MB memory, GeForce 3 TI 200.  I've installed DirectX 9.0a and the latest drivers for my video card (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
