Asus Essence STX II + s/pdif output with Asio driver
« on: January 14, 2019, 06:11:01 am »

Hi,

Just received my Asus Essence STX II sound card for my Windows 10 64 bits HTPC (JRiver).
My need for now is to only use s/pdif outptut (coax).

Have some questions about it.

Drivers:
2 possibilities
- Asus one (8.1.11.5 from september 2015)
- UNi Xonar Drivers (UNi Xonar W10 1825 v1.81a r2 from jun 2016)

Which one is the best ?
I currently use Uni Xonar in Low DPC latency mode.

s/pdif output with Asio:

On the JRiver audio control panel, I can see:

Asus Xonar Asio Driver (64) [ASIO]
High Speakers (Asus Essence STX II Audio Device) [WASAPI]
Num output  (Asus Essence STX II Audio Device) [WASAPI]
... + same things for Kernel streaming and Direct Sound

I'd like to use Asio for the s/pdif output. The Asio choice here above is for analog outptus (RCA) (I suppose it is).
Maybe there are some configurations steps to do for this ...

PS:
Other question. Regarding audio over HDMI (with my Nvidia GTX 1070 card), only WASAPI outptut is possible ? No Asio or most qualitative option available ?

Thanks for helping.

I had STX II but changed to USB solution:

- You should use the Asus STX II ASIO drivers
- If you have installed the STX II drivers you should see something like Asus ASIO Driver under Options->Audio Device
- Also you must set the bit depth in the Audio Control to 24 bit, default is 16 bit

Also enable:
"Device uses only most significant 24-bits". (if you have a 24 bit DAC)
and
TPDF Dithering in the advanced options->Audio->Advanced Settings

Hi,

Thanks for replying.
Are you sure Asus driver is mandatory ? I read we can use both Asus or Uni Xonar ones. Most of people prefer Uni Xonar for stability and sound performance.

There are not much informations regarding my question but I found this topic:

Looks like there is a possibility to select [Asio] output and manage channel offset to have audio flow output on s/pdif.

It is not mandatory but I have used the STX II Asio drivers for ~1.5 years without any issue. In the Open Driver Panael you set the card to use 24 bit.
