Android OS Discussion
« on: January 14, 2019, 09:30:02 am »

Would it make sense to create an Android specific section of the board, since it's the same product... but different, like the Mac/Linux versions/sections?

We will probably do that, but not just yet.

I've been using JRiver for Android for a couple days now, and it's actually working pretty well. My only thoughts on things missing are...

1) Getting gapless playback working. This is the big one for me as I listen to albums (e.g. Pink Floyd) that segue into each other. Right now there's a gap between songs.

2) The inability to remove items from the library + media files used for other apps, e.g. Hangouts (Hangouts Call and Hangouts Message), are being added to the library (under Unassigned) when they shouldn't be, IMO. Can the Hangouts files be added to an exclusion list so they're not imported?

3) The persistent notification stays even if you close/swipe away JRiver for Android. IMO, the notification should only appear when a) JRiver for Android is in focus and/or b) JRiver for Android is playing something. The only way to fully close JRiver for Android is to force stop the app.

I've used it a bit as well and the only "issue" I see is I have to actually go in and Quit the app.

Usually, I don't close an app like that and instead swipe it closed. I assume this may have to do with the way it integrates for notifications and playback but I really don't know as I'm not a developer.

Good to know Android will be given first-class citizen status soon and get its own section. ;)

It may take a few years, but I think Android and its cousin, ChromeOS, will merge and become a major OS for devices other than phones and tablets.  Our Linux version of MC runs on ChromeOS (Crostini) now.  I'm looking forward to having a stable, open OS to build applications for.

I believe Google will replace both Android and ChromeOS with Fuchsia in a few years. They're actively developing it right now and they've recently added support for the Android Runtime (ART) which will allow Fuchsia to run Android apps.

When it comes to fruition, it'll be much faster and will have better performance than Android and ChromeOS.
