Freezing problem
« on: October 17, 2018, 08:17:55 am »

Hello,

I am experiencing random freezes on JRiver, and I was not able to isolate a pattern for the issue.

The problem:
-Randomly while playing audio, but also at times just browsing the interface while nothing is playing, the interface freezes. If a song is playing, usually it plays uninterrupted until the end, but no other song starts. At some point of the freeze, the JRiver window rescales and covers the Windows task bar, with nasty rescaling. At that point Windows pops up the "This software stopped responding" dialog and I have to restart JRiver. This can happen twice in 5 minutes, or once in a day, seemingly at random.

What I've tried so far:
-Resetting JRiver/ any settings
-Reinstalled JRiver
-Disabled AutoImport
-Tried playing different kind of content (videos, Mp3s, FLACs...)
-Updated my graphics drivers

I'm playing through a Network drive that seems to be working properly.

Would any one have any ideas of what to look for ?

I'd be happy to give more in formation in case they are needed.

Log sent to JRiver team.

Thanks.

Windows Defender.

I'm going to deactivate the realtime protection and report on failure if JRiver freezes again under those conditions

I've had the problem as described by Sonoki recently as well, happened twice in the last week.  Never had this before.  Running 10 Pro and Windows Defender with exclusions for MC24 (but not as comprehensive as detailed early in the link).

Happened again today, MC24 (latest build) froze about a third-of-a-way into an album.  Had to restart Windows to get it working again.  It seems that it only occurs on the first album of an evening's listening.  Have enabled logging, and will report back.

Log attached.  MC24 'froze' 11.30 into a 44.20 whole album track.  Help please, thanks.

Additional info: just discovered that MC has also been saving a copy of its library backup in Documents under This PC, going back to MC20.  I've always deliberately saved them on my D-drive which is a USB memory stick and is permanently attached to the PC.  So I have two libraries.  Not certain if this helps or hinders the fault finding.

Froze again tonight, similar looking log, in that MC seems to be trying to find the album GRRR! by the Rolling Stones that only existed in the library briefly a month or so back.  It no longer does.  Have to restart computer to get MC24 (latest build) working again.

It's possible nothing was picked up in the log, and nobody knows what it could be (or one the devs are unable to reproduce it). That's kinda par for the course with software development - some users encountering issues, however the devs are unable to reproduce it and nothing is in the log suggesting why it happens. Now, if somebody has an issue and they can reproduce it 100% of the time (and can give steps to reproduce the issue) then that helps the devs out.

But you'd be surprised how often MC issues are caused external issues (like antiviruses, unstable networks, bad hardware, etc) and it can be hard to diagnose sometimes. The weird and wonderful (freak problems) topic is full of external issues causing problems for MC. You might give that topic a read and see if anything listed is similar to your issue (though to be honest, I'd say the issue if your case is likely in the network somewhere - you might try local files and see if you can reproduce the issue).

Yes but:

Somebody could have said they couldn't find anything in the logs, and,

My files are on the C drive, and always have been since pre-MC20 days.

You can also read the logs.  Look at the bottom of the log.

If it's a crash, not a freeze, look at the previous log.

Looking at your logs, before the end I can see MC is importing and doing audio analysis on FLAC files. As an experiment you might try either disabling auto-import or disabling audio analysis and see if the freeze still happens.

You can disable audio analysis by going to MC's Options > Library & Folders > click on Configure auto-import and uncheck the Analyze audio for audio files box. If it still happens, you might try unchecking Build thumbnails too.

Tried unchecking and disabling as suggested but still experiencing 'freezing'.  This seems to happen within the first 15 or so minutes of a playing session, and once the computer has been restarted (the only way to fully shutdown MC24), all is fine for the rest of the evening.  Over the weekend I uninstalled MC24 and reinstalled afresh but last night it 'froze' again but unfortunately I hadn't set the logging process in motion so no log to examine.  The computer works fine in all other regards.  Will continue to monitor.

Previously reported freezing problems with MC24 continued last night despite following all advice given.  Today fancied listening to some Wishbone Ash, trying to open the file crashed MC several times.  Gone back to MC23, playing fine.  Happy now.

I'm heartened that many other much more knowledgeable and experienced people are now on the case of what appear to be similar issues.
