JR24 stuttering in LinuxMint19
« on: January 26, 2019, 09:15:07 am »

When playing movies (mkv) JR24 is stuttering: basically one second smooth then stutter one second smooth etc... Both Mkv containing blurays rips and dvd rips. At the same time VLC plays all files very smoothly. On the same machine with Win 7 no problems.

Intel 6600T chip (530 internal intel graphics), 8GB RAM, SSD ?

(audio files are playing without a problem). Why so slow performance of JRiver?
JRMARK: 4142 (math: 1637, Video:  4365, Database: 6425),

Newest JR24 installed.

With full screen CPU is about 25% on each of the 4 cores, Memory stays at 1.6GB, DSP with mixing channels from 6 to stereo. output on Dell monitor (1920 I assume 60hz because I doubt it has 24 as i have not connected to TV yet).

Also: what are the settings? is any upscale to 4k possible by software (say with hardware acceleration?)

Hardware accelerated video decoding with MC24 for Linux only currently works with VAAPI (and only MPEG2, VC1 and H.264) with Intel/AMD GPUs. If you had a Nvidia GPU, it'd actually work much better via NVDEC with more video compression formats supported, including H.265/HEVC.

It's a very recent addition (which will likely get improved in MC25) so it may not fully work yet, not sure.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

Thanks, interesting info but we don't want to completely sidetrack the main question...

With the setup i mentioned neither cpu power nor memory seems to be limiting factors? VLC is faster but not by much. So why JRiver is stuttering? (in fact JRiver was working smooth on the same machine with Win7 up which I just erased...)

Are there any debug options one can look into? deep settings? I have MythTV on much less powerfull machine and without a problem but MythTV seems also much more configurable.

Hardware decoding/acceleration is great because one can just simple use cheap cpu/setup (or let's say dedicated chips like broadcom mini pci) and for building low power appliances.

But with i5-6600 is not a hardware problem...

For instance what engine JR is using in Linux? Is it ffmpeg?

Looks like the only problem is full screen mode as it plays smooth in window (even if window is 99% of the screen),

Is there any way to pin-point the problem? some debugging settings in JRiver?
