Author Topic: How Do I Move MC From One PC to Another PC Without Losing "Playlists"/etc?  (Read 8910 times)

I need to move my registered copy of MC to another PC without losing my "playlists/cover art".

My existing copy of MC is on a W7 PC and I'm retiring the hardware to move on to a more modern W10 PC.  I've always made "Library Backups".

One of my concerns is that all of my music currently resides on a W7 partition (D:\Music) which is not available on W10.  My current W7 "Data" folder resides on the default C: partition containing my "playlists/cover art/library backups".

On my W10 PC, I can't use D: as that partition is a system partition.  I had to create a partition on E: for my music and other material.  How can I copy everything over and not lose anything as this would be a major hassle for the large amount music/playlists I've accrued over time.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Jim,

Thanks for replying but that wiki is regarding "moving files" within one machine.

I need assistance in setting up MC on a completely different PC without losing any of my "playlists/cover art/MC backups.

Library backup contains all your playlists. Just restore a backup onto the new PC.
Manually copy the backups across of course.
You will have to manually copy your Cover Art across as well. MC will rebuild Thumbnails based on that Cover Art once you have MC up and running.
Use the Rename, Move, and Copy Files function on the new PC to change all references in your Library from D:\ to E:\. There are lots of threads on doing this, plus the Wiki article on Moving Files and RM&CF function. Make sure to stop the automatic import in MC when you start it with an empty Library. See message in the bottom left corner. Also, turn off Auto Import in the old PC before you make a backup to transfer to the new PC. You can turn it back on after completing the transfer and changing the drive letter.

If you have special Themes or Custom Resources (keyboard shortcuts and such), you will need to manually move those as well. Also any third party plug-ins.

Best to keep the old PC working while you set up and test the new PC, and for a while after, so that you can check if anything important is missing. But the above are the basics.
