Problem with Tivo Beacon
« on: May 20, 2003, 02:41:33 pm »

I followed the instructions posted in the forums and set up MediaCenter to work with my HMO-enabled TiVo. Then, starting last night I started getting this message on startup: "TiVo Connect Beacon is not available!" I have tried restarting the TiVo server, reinstalling the TiVo Desktop software, but nothing seems to work.

So, my questions are:

1. What do I lose if I run Media Center without the TiVo Beacon?

2. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how have you solved it?

Are you using a linksys wireless network?

At a guess, it sounds like Media Server is starting before TiVo Beacon, so Media Server doesn't find the beacon and starts it's own. Then when TiVo Beacon tries to start, it can't bind to the port.

If this is what is happening, then you are losing two things: the ability to run a TiVo Publisher side-by-side with Media Server and choose from both on the TiVo, and the ability to auto-detect (if you've already entered the IP address of your server, this doesn't matter).

You can test my guess by telling Media Server not to start automatically and then restarting. If the message doesn't come up, I'm probably right. If this is the case, let me know and I'll come up with something to fix this.

Yes, the problem does appear to be the fact that Media Server is starting first. Is there a way to control the order?

Not right now, I'll try  to get something in the next build.

In the TiVo options of Media Server, I've added a startup delay (in seconds). Just set this to 30 or so, and it should fix the problem.

This will be ready in the next build.

Do you intend at some point to make Media Server run as a Windows service? Then it could be configured to depend on the TiVo beacon service.

If you could also make MS independent of Media Center, that would be a huge improvement. (IMHO)

Someday it'll be a service.

I don't understand what you mean about "independent".

Thanks for the prompt work on this issue. I look forward to the next build. In the meanwhile, I suppose I can let TiVo beacon run at startup and then manually start Media Server.
