DSD Multichannel to Oppo 205...is there a way? Help! :)
« on: March 13, 2019, 04:50:17 pm »

Ok...up until now i've been using the fantastic Exasound E28 MC DAC which works perfectly with JRiver.  But I'd like to retire that to free up a valuable analog input on my preamp now that i picked up one of the last 205s.  It also have better DACs than the Exa.   The problem is that Oppo only handles 2ch via its USB input which is what I'm familiar with (so that's instantly out)...and i cant get any other way to work.   Not sure about HDMI, but Ethernet should work with full MC resolution, but i can't figure out how to set J River up for the Oppo to see my mostly SACD ISO files properly.   Also, I definitely can't for the life of me Microsoft's archaic (direct) SMB/NFS sharing configuration disaster.  It probably doesn't help that the main files i want are on an external USB drive from what i've read.

Sure I could extract every file to local storage (even that is not 100% successful...as well as  PIA), but this being 2019, there has to be another way to play my original DSD files without PCM conversion?

Does anyone have a multichannel configuration and gotten it to work?    How would i configure J River (or the Oppo) to do it...is there a guide somewhere?

These might help...

Looks like DSD with the Oppo 205 only works when connecting a USB hard drive directly to the Oppo but it doesn't say anything about SACD ISOs, so I'm assuming you'd have to extract/split DFF or DSF files from the SACD ISOs (using ISO2DSD or another tool like that) and use those that way. Nor does it mention in that article about about supporting DSD-over-DLNA (DoPE). However, it looks like the Oppo 105D and 105JPD can do it with MC connected to the Oppo via USB via the USB DAC port.

FYI, you won't be able to use HDMI for this, as DSD over HDMI isn't possible from a computer/PC/Mac/etc.

AD...thank you for this very valuable info!  Yes...it seems the best (easiest) way is using USB DAC to the 205 (which i know will work)...it will just be only 2 channel vs the MC I'm used to with the Exasound.    I'll read over that link as it appears to be a well-known issue....

After painstakingly ISO'ing everything from my multitude of SACDs using my older Oppo player, i may be resigned to extract all to local USB.  Of course, also there's a few i've acquired that just cannot be extracted (I'll leave it at that) so I'll have to figure out a way to work with those.

In addition, in an attempt to go fully streaming, I also ISOd all my DVD audio files--of which i have at least as many as SACD--but only old firmware past Oppos will play those intact.  There is no extracting a DVD-Audio ISO without *literally* extracting the tracks which is a royal PIA for all the ones i have.  I have a permanent wish-list for J River to support DVD-Audio ISO, just as they do the SACD version...maybe one day it will happen.  Hey, i never thought the cult-classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch would ever see the light of day on Blu-Ray--but now apparently a 4K Criterion (no less) version is coming in June!

DSF (DSD) or DFF (DSD) can be streamed multichannel over DLNA but pretty sure it won't stream an ISO.  Oppo removed that functionality a long time ago, so you'll need to extract the individual tracks.  If you ripped the iso's then you shouldn't have issues doing this - except for time it will take and hard drive space needed :)
To stream individual DSF or DFF:
Configure a media server and configure to stream as original format.  Associate that server with the Oppo when it shows up in your network list under playing now.   When you play the file back Oppo will indicate it's SACD playback.

Only thing it won't do over network is provide gapless for anything.  For that you need to play from a network drive, or hard drive connected to the unit vis USB port.  Edit:  It won't do gapless DSD at all.  For that what I do is rip the SACD ISO to one large .dff with a cue sheet.  When streaming the .dff via JRiver the CUE information displays correctly, but it's kind of useless because when streaming you are not able to select individual tracks.  It's an all or nothing playback.
The CUE file works fine when used with Oppo's app for USB connected drive playback.

Funny that you are going from exasound to JRiver.  I'd prefer to go the other way, but it's not worth spending the money on that DAC.  My 205 gives me most of what I want - except the gapless playback over DLNA. And it sounds great.
