Main Album Page
« on: April 04, 2019, 11:14:38 am »

Obviously I must be doing something wrong when I installed MC25 because when I play an album and I close down the player, when I restart it, it will go back to the last album I played instead of going to the main page. How can I change it to go to the main page? I looked everywhere in options but I must be overlooking something.

MC has a setting for where to start.  You may have it set to Last Location.

I tried that Jim but it didn't work. I have an older version of MC on another computer and did the Last Location and it worked, but on MC25, it does not respond to the changed. I can change however change it to Playing Now, Images or the other tabs and it will change, but it does not respond to Last Location or Audio.

No it's not, it's set up to audio which should give me my start page with all of my songs alphabetized, but it doesn't.

Odd, mine is doing exactly what I expect. Play album, shut down MC25, restart MC25 after a pause and the view shown is standard view audio with albums selected as it is the first choice in the audio list.

All of my other MC did exactly as yours. I didn't change anything other than to download MC25!

You could try doing a library restore from your very latest MC24 installation back ups, to see if it corrects the problem.

Well, now I am stumped too! Sorry I couldn't help. Just a thought when you did the mc24 restore, did you do a backup of it's library including settings before doing the restore? That's about the only suggestion I can offer.

When you say "it will go back to the last album I played", does that mean it shows Display View for the last played Album?

Does playback start?

If you had "Options > Startup > Startup Actions > Start playing current playlist" set, and had "Options > General > Behaviour > Jump on play" set to "Display View", or "Playing Now", or whatever View you are seeing, then I think that is what MC would do.

Yep, I just tested. Reopening MC results in playback starting, and MC jumping to Display View, as per settings.

You could stop that behaviour by setting "Options > General > Advanced > Clear Playing Now on exit". The setting "Options > Startup > Startup Interface > Location" would then work as intended again, as Playing Now would be empty and there would be nothing to play, so MC doesn't jump to the View you selected in "Options > General > Behaviour > Jump on play".

If that isn't exactly what you are seeing, it might give you a hint.

The problem with computers is that they do exactly what you tell them to.

But computers are not the problem - it is the software - if  I say I want this to happen the software must drive the computer to do what I say. Embedding the what I say in various unknown menu selections is not what the user wants. If I say start here - I expect  the system to start here, it should not be left to the user to change various unknown menu components to achieve that end.

If the "problem" is what RoderickGI suspects, then it was the software doing exactly what the user told it to do.

The aim of software design is to give a seamless interface between what the user wants to do and how they do it. Having deeply embedded menu items in seemingly unrelated places isn't what I wod call a seamless interface.  If I click a menu item saying start here I would expect it to start here. I may be confused by the Brexit Situation, which seems to be another unresolvable problems in life!

I jus tried that, still the same. It wants to stay on the last album that I played and won't go to the start up interface.

Post an image of the screen that is displayed when you restart MC. Full MC interface, so we can see the Navigation Bar and your View selections.

Also post an image of the View you want to see.

That's what I want to see, what I see is whatever album that I have open before I close MC. When I open it back up instead of seeing the files (screenshot) I see the last album I played.

I'm afraid you are out of luck.

25.0.1 (1/9/2019)
5. NEW: Made the pane selection persist between runs if you start in the last location.

MC now remembers the Pane selection between restarts of MC. It seems that it does this even if you have selected the "Startup Interface > Location" of Audio or Video, and were using a Panes View, such as the Files View.

But really, it is one click to reset the Pane selection. Look at the tab in the first image you posted. It shows "Files > Reset Selection". Just click on "Reset Selection" and you will have the View that you want. No scrolling required, which I suspect was the main concern.

No problem in clicking the reset button, but curious as to why you have the options to have pane selections upon start-up and then don't have them executed or have it do something else by default? Has to be a reason!

Well, I don't have any options because I am just a user like you. I don't work for JRiver.

I'm sure there was good reason to change MC to make pane selection persist between runs. I don't recall. But there were some fixes involving that area a while back.

Anyway, MC is executing exactly what you asked it to do; Start in Audio. In addition, it is starting in the Audio sub-View that you were using previously. That was an improvement in the past, as it used to start at the top level Audio View. In addition, if it was a Pane sub-View such as Files, it is using the previous filter selection. What isn't it executing? It isn't defaulting to something else. It is going back to exactly where you left it, if you were on an Audio View when you closed MC.

Yeah, I've found the new pane selection persistence behavior is actually pretty annoying as there's no way to restore the previous behavior. I figured somebody at some point would notice this and post something like this. I wish there was one more additional Location: setting, something like Last Location (Reset Selection) which restores the previous behavior. Nonetheless, as Roderick said just try to remember to press Reset Selection before closing MC (even though I tend to forget this quite often, hehe).

P.S. Even if you press Reset Selection and close MC and reopen it, there's actually a small bug that appears that I need to report at some point, see if you can spot it. ;)
