Tried editing the banner display on top of the player and changes will not save.

Where are you editing it at? main.xml? If you're going to be doing this, I highly suggest taking the skin you're editing, making a copy of it (and rename it something else) then open main.xml and change the name of the skin, otherwise MC updates will override your changes. From there make your desired changes in the main.xml file.

are you right clicking on the display area and choosing customizing display? all while being aware of "alternate display" and then ok your way out.....before I made changes I copied all the lines of text to a notepad doc so I have a backup of the original text....can change colors add time and date when not playing can see what version I'm on.....on and on and on

there's a lot of discussion on this just not sure what version of MC it's under

Ahhh, I think you're on the right path ~OHM~ after re-reading the OP's post.

one never knows with so little info, I was never good at mind reading between the lines. 

could be a client....could be a non admin user and on and on.
