Handheld not seen since MC22... [Solved]
« on: April 16, 2019, 07:23:23 am »

Hi,

I have a Astell & Kern Kann handheld. It is recognized using MC22, however it is not being recognized using either MC24 or MC25 (I did not purchase MC23).

I have tried: 'Options -> Handheld -> Device Management -> Redetect all Devices', tried setting it up 'Options -> Handheld -> Device Management -> Add Device' (but cannot locate / see it there), tried changing several settings (and changing them back to defaults), etc. I can see the Kann using *Windows Explorer* not as a drive, but as a 'Device' and can see the individual memory cards and internal memory in the device.

I have a Pono that works with with MC24 and MC25. The main difference with the Pono and the Kann using *Windows Explorer* is that in MC22, MC24 and MC25, I do not see the Pono as a Device, I only see the individual memory card and internal memory as individual drives using Windows Explorer. Again, the Kann is seen as an individual device in all (x3) MC2x versions.

I have found a couple of other posts on this forum regarding this same topic, but have not seen any solutions. I have played with this for quite some time under MC24 and more recently using MC25. Any new ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Danny

If you're using the 64-bit build of MC24/MC25, try using the 32-bit build of MC24/MC25 instead (since MC22 is 32-bit only).

Hi,

I appreciate the suggestion re: 64-bit version of MC24 / MC25. However, I am indeed using MC24 / MC25 32-bit versions. I did not download the 64-bit versions.

I can go into MC25 'About Media Center' and it shows vs. 25.0.18 with no 64-bit text info shown.

I have also temporarily taken down my firewall with no success.

Thanks,

Danny

Why is it that always the most expensive handhelds don't work? Can't someone find a $10 mp3 player that has issues, so I can get it and figure out whats wrong? :)

In any case, it appears that the A&K devices do something particularly weird that we don't account for. Maybe a Log might help, if you can make one. https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

Hi Hendrik,

Thanks for the reply.

I wasn't fully aware of the logging capability. I'll try this (enable logging), look in 'Users\x\Roaming\J River\Media Center' and try to decipher the resulting file(s).

I'll also forward this info. If I find anything useful, I'll post results.

Thanks,

Danny

Hi Hendrik,

This is what I initially found after enabling logging, resetting log to get only data when MC25 is seeing the Kann and trying to enumerate it (I am somewhat familiar with USB and the protocol for setting up USB communications with an embedded device such as the Kann).

1) There are two initial MC25 messages after plugging in the Kann (somewhat abbreviated here):

'Handheld AnalyzeDevices EnumerateDevices AddingDevicetoDeviceList found device xxxx kann xxx Device is an empty drive bay'
then
'AnalyzeDevices EnumerateDevices Adding device to skip list'

In other words, MC25 does not understand the Kann.

2) When plugging in the Pono (again somewhat abbreviated here; it behaves a bit differently since the individual drives are seen and not the device, as I previously mentioned):

'Handheld AnalyzeDevices EnumerateDevices DeviceInfo xxxusbxxx 'volume root L'
and another 'volume root K'.

These  'volume root L' and another 'volume root K' are indeed the individual drive letters that I see when plugging in the Pono and using *Windows Explorer* I see these new drives pop up. This is where the Pono USB communication 'link' is set up.

*Summary* regarding the Kann: MC25 (and I am assuming the same for MC24) do not / cannot read the content / do not understand what the Kann is reporting back when it is being enumerated by MC25. In other words, MC25 cannot fully communicate with the Kann. MC22 worked with the Kann just fine, something was changed after MC22 release rendering the Kann unusable with MC.

Question: Can some with jriver please look at this?

Thanks,

Danny
