Chromium Problem
« on: May 06, 2019, 08:01:06 am »

Hello All,
Forgive me for bringing up something that "sort-of" has been discussed before and alot, but mine is different..."sort-of" :)
I have no problem with any part of playing back any media files, All works perfectly, and has for years (thanks JRiver team!).  Music jukebox, TV and Movie player, it does it all. Now that you are properly buttered up, here is my problem.
We love MC for our pool night music. We play both audio and video tracks. No problem there.
But now with streaming services we are kind of being drawn towards sites like YouTubeMusic, because of the large collection (especially older music videos (and new). But we want to keep using MC. We all know it, I am pretty good at configuratin' and can whip up a view or whatever pretty fast. The option seems to be available to open a page inside of MC that shows youtube, and you can pick a track and then choose to play it in the player or, even download it. That is what we really want to do, download the ones we don't have but really want and add them to our collection and continue to have MC be the only player.
I have my Internet Engine set to IE, and click youtube and the page appears, I click a video and the box pops up, I say "grab it" (the proper download folder is already chosen in File Locations). It starts to play the video, but nothing downloads to the folder. Checking details it says it "Failed" no reason given that I know how to see.
On to Chrome. I set Chrome as the internet browser, click youtube and the dreaded adding components, Chromium box appears. It will stay there forever if I let it. Nothing ever happens. I do have a bandwidth monitor and it show  a very short but big download, like 150mb for 1-2 seconds. But the box doesn't go away. If I click cancel MC is locked up. Sometimes I can click the X and get MC to close, but the Adding components window won't go away without crashing it by clicking on it repeatedly. The window doesn't even show in Task Mangler. I have to abuse it to make it give up and ask if I want to close it the hard way. Several machines (testing) do the same thing. Won't download using IE, lock up adding if Chrome is chosen.
I read the other posts with problems and went to the post that has recommendations about firewall.
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,113947.0.html
I let it through, i removed it and rediscovered it in the firewall, I shut the firewall off. No go. I even put on Comcasts Norton product and defeated the windows firewall, still no go.
What is it trying to do when adding components? I see the data come down, but nothing happens. Any chance Chrome can be part of the build...I just reread that of course not. it isn't yours, you have to go get it after install.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Don

Have you set windows firewall to give you notifications about programs trying to access the internet? I have just tried switching from IE to chromium and it worked correctly.

I can see the small download happen after I click YouTube, I am sure it is the package needed, but something else keeps it from completing.
One thing that has caused problems in the past is my library. So to make sure, I deinstalled and reinstalled MC, and did not restore my library.
When I clicked YouTube, I saw the window, saw the short download, and then the window went away and youtube opened up under Chrome.
Something about my Library kept it from completing.

I will keep the library empty while testing.. When I pick a video, and choose download it, the download fails.
Where can I see a log of what happened? Why did it fail? More testing shows some do, some do not download.

---Update-- I found the log and enabled it, but it makes little sense. Lots of Destroying things in the log...
I cleared the log and did one attempt.
It looks mostly like this.  it repeats several times.

Some Youtube videos are "protected" and can't be played.  Did you try many different videos?

It seems I can play any video, but some fail on download.
I am most interested in the new "Journey Through Time" music...
Neil Schon himself posted many videos from the show.

All play, only some download. the ones that don't say "Failed" in details.
But some do play and download...
I would think Neil would either "protect" them all or none.
There is a playlist of 23 videos from the show. If I use YouTube Downloader, I get them all,
if I use MC, less than 25% come down. I wish I could figure out the reason for the failure.
For now if I find a YouTube I want I will save its url and use YTD.

Thanks for your response. I assume MC does it's best and relies on Youtube to play nice... which it probably does not :)

If you're wanting to download videos from YouTube, I'd highly recommend using youtube-dl from a command line or a frontend for it, like youtube-dlg and see if that works better for you. youtube-dl is capable of downloading protected videos, e.g. VEVO videos.

Thanks. I do have YTD Pro and it gets them all.
We were looking for a way to do this:
All friends playing pool, one guy mentions video that he saw and we should have.
We look in MC and it is not there, so we want a nice way to look at you tube.
Current method is to stop MC (Can't leave it paused as it holds the sound card.)
Then surf to Youtube, look for the video, grab it. Find it on the pc, rename it, and put it in the right spot on the HD. Then have MC import it.
It looked like we were going to be able to use Youtube inside of MC and when we found one we wanted to add, just dl it and MC adds it.
But if it can only grab a smaller subset of videos, then it doesn't really work at all for us.
Not a really big deal, but it sounded like it would be perfect for us.
