Weird DVD and rip issue
« on: May 10, 2019, 05:09:56 am »

I have ripped a DVD (Fiddler on the Roof Special Edition) and it has ripped successfully. And yet when I play it I get the message "This Player is incompatible with the region marking of this disc."  However VLC plays this just fine.

The region for the disc is Region 1, the region for the player is Region 1.

What do I need to do to get this to play under MediaCenter?

I used MediaCenter, whatever its method is, which looks like it pulls out the contents of the iso.

As long as you don't need menus, I'd recommend using MakeMKV to rip DVDs as it should remove the copy protection and any region restrictions and should play fine in MC.

i am with Donkey on this one ... makeMKV is my personal choice for dvd bluray ripping (it rips bit perfect ... except for Dolby Vision, which it cannot rip) ... makeMKV can rip into folder structure preserving the menus if you need them ... i personally only interested in main title

my guess ... your DVD has no copy protection but has region lock ... without copy protection MC was able to rip it but was not able to remove region lock

VLC was able to play that rip fine probably cause it has some mechanism to bypass region lock (VLC cannot bypass copy protection though)

To summarize ... MC does not bypass copy protection nor region lock (not because JRiver cannot do it ... but because JRiver choose not to do it to avoid any legal issues) ... unless you run third party app that does that on fly (dvdfab is one of those), MC is pretty much useless at ripping commercial DVDs and bluray

Thank you both for you info and suggestions.  I am going to tray make MKV.  OMFG dvdfab is expensive!!!

I am still confused as to why MediaCenter could play the dvd if its region locked, but right now as long as I can put the dvd into the NAS I will be happy :)

Again thank you both.

Your DVD region matches your DVD-drive region … so MC can play DVD (only those with no copy protection … since MC can play your DVD and you do not use DVDfab/AnyDVD, I suspect your DVD has no copy protection)

I suspect its also the reason you able to rip your DVD using MC … but MC has not removed region lock while ripping … as your hardrive does not support concept of "region" … MC was unable to play the rip of the harddrive

… that's what I think is happening to you … of course, I can be wrong lol

PS. as monkey mentioned, MakeMKV removes copy protection AND region lock while ripping
