Author Topic: Settings for PCM (using DSP Studio) and DSD on a single DLNA Server  (Read 2295 times)

I would like to configure one single DLNA Server which would allow PCM upsampling as well as play DSD64 and DSD128 files. Is this possible? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Music and MC (24.0.78) reside on a dedicated mini pc running Window 10 Home and connected to the DAC over LAN.
Presently, I have configured a DLNA Server for PCM (using DSP Studio) and a second one for DSD. Everytime I would like to play a DSD track after listening to a PCM track, I have to backtrack and change DLNA Server on my Yamaha DAC with MusicCast app, which is a pain ;-). Hope there is a solution.
Thanks!

Are you using an up to date build of MC? There was recently a feature added to DLNA server settings where you can select which media formats are converted and which are played as original.

I have installed MC 24.0.78.
I did not find anything newer than this.

  • The color of Spring...

It's a feature added to MC25, as far as I can tell.

The new DSD option lets you play, for example, 1x and 2x DSD as DSD and also convert 4xDSD to PCM.  It is useful if you have DSD files with sampling rates that your DAC does not play.

You should be able to play both DSD and PCM with the same settings. What settings are you using for DSD that preclude also playing PCM? If you are using Output Encoding to play DSD that should only be used to convert everything to DSD, not for playing DSD files. Enable bitstreaming and you should be able to play both PCM and DSD without Output Encoding.

Let me say, I do not use DLNA for DSD so there may be something about DSD on DLNA that I am not familiar with.

Thank you for the inputs so far:-)

For DSD, I have Audio mode: Original and that's it. I can play DSD64 and DSD128 without any problems. With this setting, I cannot use the DSP Studio.

For the rest (ripped CDs, purchased music etc), I have Audio Mode set to: Specified output format (Format: PCM 24-bit). With this, I can upscale flac and wav files to 96, 176.4 and 192.
I tried enabling bitstreaming for DSD, but it did not help.
Seems someone using Geek Out 450 managed to get it done four years ago on MC 20. His instructions are pretty detailed, however, MC24 looks different, so that even after several tries, I could not get it done.

Thanks!

Can you select Specified Output Format Only When Necessary and then uncheck the formats you want to pass through without converting, like flac and dsf?

Tried. Also Output unchecked in DSP Studio.
Did not work😞

What didn't work? Did PCM work? Did DSD work?

As I said, I do not have a DLNA DSD setup, so am doing this blind.

DSD did not work. PCM was fine.
If I configure a DLNA server with specified output format PCM 24-bit, then I can play upsampled flac files as well as DSD files, however, at 174.2 only, which does not sound as good as DSD2.8 as is expected.
How did you get DSD working without DLNA?

With USB, you just set it to bitstream DSD (in Audio)  and select DoP or native in the ASIO driver (if used) and  DSD works. You can also use DSP studio to upsample PCM files.

There are 2 ways you could be getting 176 Khz.

One is that there is a DSD to PCM conversion, which would convert 1x DSD to 352 KHz and 2x DSD to 705 KHz, with DSP Studio settings to down sample 352 and 705 to 176 KHz.  So, set them to no change in DSP studio.

The other is  1x DSD uses 176 KHz for DoP. It uses 352 KHz for 2x DSD DoP.  So a 1x DSD might show as 176 KHz. if it is converted to DoP. Any idea if your receiver uses DoP?

What are you using for your connection to the Yamaha?

My suggestion for DLNA would be

Specified Output Format Only When Necessary
Under Advanced - Audio Formats To Convert  uncheck flac, dff, dsf
DSP Studio - set PCM upsampling as appropriate.

I am not sure why you would get PCM for DSD with those settings.  It seems like it should not convert dsf or dff if you do not have them checked. If that does not work, I am not sure what else to try.

If you cannot get one DLNA setup to work, you could put PCM in one zone and DSD in another zone and use ZoneSwitch to go between the two based on bit depth (1 or >1).  There are some limitations, such as the switching does not always work correctly in playlists, I believe. Again, not something I use regularly, but worth considering.

Thanks a million dtc. Your suggestion worked!

DSP Studio - set PCM upsampling as appropriate.

You made my listening pleasure even greater :-)

Kind Regards

Hi!

Using the settings in my post above, I could use one DLNA Server for both: PCM (upsampling using DSP Studio) and DSD in original formats.

However, yesterday, I noticed that wav files were not being upsampled. They were playing at 44.1 khz as ripped from a CD. Flac files (44.1 khz) were being upsampled to 192 khz as setup in DSP Studio.

This is a strange situation, since a DLNA Server with the setting of Mode: Specified output format and Format: PCM 24-bit, allows me to use the DSP Studio to upsample PCM files to 192 khz and with this setting, even the wav files get upsampled as they should. Only drawback: I cannot play DSD as well.

Yesterday, I downloaded a trial version of MC25, however, the result is the same.

I need your help in finding out what I must have missed.

Thanks!

Glad you got it almost working. I do not know what is happening with the wav file.  I am traveling and I cannot easily test your problem.

I would start a new topic on your problem on the MC25 board. It will get more views there and someone may know about the issue.
