DSD music
« on: June 02, 2019, 10:11:46 am »

Hi all,  I play a lot of downloaded DSD multichannel surround (classical) music.  Up until now, I let JRiver (I have media center 25) convert the DSD files to 192KHz and send the file to my pre/pro (HDMI from my NVidia GTX 1080 video card).  I recently upgraded my pre/pro to the new Marantz AV8805.  What are your thoughts about letting JRiver make the conversion or bistream the DSD (64fs) file directly to the Marantz?

If you're going to be using HDMI, it won't work since it's not possible to bitstream DSD from a PC because the onboard/dedicated graphics card (doesn't matter if it's Nvidia, AMD or Intel) don't have any support for DSD in their drivers. DSD over HDMI only works if you're using something like an Oppo player that plays SACD discs, which will work over HDMI to the Marantz receiver.

If you want to do DSD your only chance depends on if the Marantz supports DSD over DLNA (DoPE). If it doesn't then you'll likely have to stick with what you've been doing, which is converting DSD to PCM (192 kHz).

Thank you!  That saves me some fiddling with my system.

The 8805 will play DSD files through the USB port, but I believe only from a usb drive, not a computer. You could load a couple of your DSD files onto a thumb drive and plug in into the receiver to see what you think of playing DSD files directly compared to converting to PCM over HDMI.

I read somewhere that NVideo was going to add DSD support but I have no details and cannot find the reference.

EDIT:  It looks like the 8805 supports DLNA and the documentation says it does DSD over a network, so DSD may well work over DLNA. Worth a try.

EDIT: In fact, the 8805 manual (page 308) references using JRiver for playing DSD over a  network.

I have a Marantz 7012 that supports DSD (upto 5.6MHz) over DLNA. (As native DSD not DoPE)
This works well with JRiver but it is limited to stereo, as the 7012 does not support multichannel over DLNA.
I assume the 8805 will be the same.
I also have an Oppo 205 and this does support multichannel over DLNA including DSD, this can then be passed into the Marantz as DSD over HDMI and again works well with JRiver but the Oppo does not do gapless playback. :(

So my conclusion would be stick with JRiver converting to PCM and sending it to your 8805 over HDMI.

N.B. if you are using any DSP in JRiver or your Marantz then the files will be converted to PCM anyway before they reach your DACs, as it is not possible to perform DSP on DSD streams.

You are right - the manual says Stereo Only.

A bit of a thread hijack but what would you DSD experts recommend for playing multichannel SACD (I have a bunch of classical ones)? Preferably via discrete outputs so I don't need to buy a new HDMI capable multichannel amp.

I do not know what you mean by "discrete outputs."  Do you mean analog?
In any case, the cheapest multichannel DSD DAC is still the exaSound and a used e28 would be my recommendation.
OTOH, if you are willing to have your DSD played via PCM (at up to 24/192), I suggest the mini-DSP u-DIO8 to which you can connect any three PCM DACs of your choice or the miniDSP u-DAC8 multichannel DAC.

If you want to actual "play" the SACD disc, then there are lots of older players out that with analog outputs. Oppo is a good bet. You can get a used BDP-93 for $225 on Audiogon. The newer BDP-103 is around $600 and the upgraded analog output model (BDP-105) is around $1000, all on Audiogon.  The advantage of a 103/105 is that you can also rip SACDs to DSD files with them.  The you can use MC and the exaSound 28 DAC to play them.

That is what I was originally looking for, a way to play them on a SACD player with discrete 5 channel analog outputs.

I wasn't aware that one could rip SACD's on anything other than a modified PS-3. Is there any modification of the hardware required?

No modification required.  You can only do it with a few players including some Oppos, Pioneers and Sonys. A clever programmer exploited a security hole in a particular chip, and his software is able to extract the bits from players with that chip.

Details here. It is a long thread, but there are summaries in the first few posts.
